Exploring the Julian Alps and the Wild Soča Valley

With so many highlights around the Julian Alps and along the turquoise blue Soča, our product management team was inspired to create a new hiking tour in Slovenia, adding a fresh adventure to the Eurohike travel portfolio in 2025. The journey begins at the picturesque Lake Bled, where a fairytale island crowned by a charming church lies at the foot of a breathtaking mountain landscape. The moment you arrive, the anticipation of exploring the region’s stunning scenery in the days ahead is undeniable. The adventure truly takes off the next day.

After a short transfer to Kranjska Gora, the first highlight awaits—the idyllic Lake Jasna. From there, serpentine trails wind up to the Vršič Pass, Slovenia’s highest mountain pass. At the summit, a spectacular alpine panorama unfolds. The descent is just as exhilarating, leading to the source of the Soča River—an inviting spot to cool off after an eventful first stage.

No hiking tour in Slovenia would be complete without tackling one of the most thrilling sections of the Soča Valley. This route takes you across several suspension bridges before reaching Bovec, a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The journey from Bovec to Kobarid is a continuous showcase of natural wonders. The Virje and Boka waterfalls plunge dramatically into the depths, while serene swimming spots along the Soča River invite you to take a refreshing dip on the way to charming Kobarid.

"Sit back and enjoy"—that’s the motto of the next day’s panoramic train ride through the stunning valleys of the Julian Alps. As the landscapes glide by, it’s the perfect moment to relax and reflect on the unforgettable experiences of the past days. A leisurely walk then leads to Lake Bohinj, where a charming lakeside church creates a picture-perfect setting definitely merits a visit. This day is all about recharging before the journey continues to the Pokljuka Plateau, a landscape framed by dense forests and dotted with picturesque villages. Crossing vast alpine meadows and the mysterious Pokljuka Gorge, the adventure comes full circle, returning to Bled—the perfect ending to an unforgettable journey.

The Allure of Triglav

For Slovenia, the majestic Triglav is far more than just a mountain. Have you ever taken a closer look at the Slovenian flag? As a national symbol, Triglav proudly adorns the state emblem. According to legend, this "three-headed god" watches over the sky, the earth, and the underworld.

Just as spectacular as the myths surrounding Triglav is the landscape of the national park that bears its name—the largest protected area in the country. A breathtaking harmony of unspoiled nature, crystal-clear waters, and diverse flora and fauna captivates countless outdoor enthusiasts each year. More than 7,000 animal species call this wilderness home, from chamois and red deer to golden eagles, brown bears, and the famous Soča Forelle.

The Taste of Slovenia

Slovenia is not only a paradise for hikers but also a must-visit destination for food lovers. Freshness and regionality lie at the heart of its culinary tradition. From hearty meat dishes and savory stews to delectable desserts, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Across 24 gastronomic regions and 3 wine-growing areas, over 400 regional specialties and beverages are offered.

On your hiking journey through the Alpine north, you’ll savor the influence of the mountain farming tradition. Cow, sheep, and goat milk form the foundation of many local dishes. Following centuries-old techniques, cheese is crafted here—rich, aromatic, and full of flavor. The renowned Kranjska sausage appears in various forms, accompanied by fermented cabbage, better known as sauerkraut, and rutabagas. The so-called Sterz, made from buckwheat or cornmeal, is a tasty side dish and a staple in local meals. A true delicacy is the Soča Forelle, freshly caught from local waters, grilled or fried to perfection.

Cool Off and Marvel at Nature’s Beauty

Rivers and lakes in postcard-perfect colors embellish the landscape along the enchanting trails. From turquoise blue to emerald green, the Soča winds through the valley, leaving many truly amazed. And the best part: there are plenty of chances to pause and refresh in the breathtaking waters. Take the plunge into the invigorating blue of Lake Bled, where healing springs are said to have a soothing effect on the body.

While swimming, enjoy the view of two iconic landmarks: the majestic Bled Castle perched atop a rock and the picturesque Church of the Assumption on a small island in the heart of Lake Bled. Lake Bohinj rivals the renowned beauty and vibrant colors of Lake Bled. Around the lake, numerous idyllic swimming spots await, with the charming northern shores being a favorite among locals.

Along the Soča River, emerald-green swimming spots beckon you to cool off. A highlight is the sandy beach near Camp Trnovo, reachable via a suspension bridge, where turquoise waters and a natural pool nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps captivate all who visit.
