Lake Walking in Austria’s Salzkammergut: Between Mountains and Lakes

Just one look at Lake Wolfgang, and you'll want to dive right into its sparkling waters, soaking in the breathtaking mountain scenery all around. Ranging from aquamarine and turquoise to brilliant azure, the lakes of the Salzkammergut dazzle with their stunning palette of colors. Framed by rugged peaks and rolling ridges, this region offers picture-perfect landscapes at every turn. Even Emperor Franz Joseph I appreciated the beauty of the Salzkammergut where he spent no fewer than 82 summers in Bad Ischl. Hallstatt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is another testament to the region’s rich natural and cultural heritage. As you explore the area on a scenic hiking tour, nature and history blend seamlessly into an unforgettable journey. Our five-day hiking adventure is packed with highlights.

Starting in St. Wolfgang, the route leads to the charming Schwarzensee, where a stop at the Seehütte Lore is highly recommended. The name Salzkammergut itself hints at the region’s history – salt has long been a valuable resource here. In keeping with this tradition, you’ll follow the Salt Trail from Hallstatt’s salt mines to Bad Ischl, then onward to Bad Goisern. Following the romantic Sissi trail, passing Lake Nussensee, and continuing along the scenic lakeside path, you'll eventually return to Lake Wolfgang. With 17 different hiking itineraries available in the Salzkammergut, there’s plenty to discover. Let yourself be inspired and experience the region’s natural and cultural treasures on your next adventure!

Pofesen

The many alpine huts in the Salzkammergut offer a delightful range of regional specialties. For a sweet finale after a hearty snack, many alpine hosts and farmers prepare Pofesen – a traditional pastry made from slices of white bread, filled with Powidl (plum jam), then fried to golden perfection. Simple yet incredibly delicious – a definite must-try!

Locally Caught Fish

Freshly caught from local waters, regional fish dishes don't get any better than this. Whether pan-fried whole, served as a fillet, or prepared as tartare, wild-caught fish is served in various delicious forms – paired with parsley potatoes, fresh market vegetables, or a crisp salad – making it the perfect light and satisfying meal after a day of hiking.

Sheep's Milk Specialties

Sheep's milk products come in many delightful variations and are a beloved part of the Salzkammergut’s culinary tradition. One standout is Aberseer sheep’s milk cheese, known for its creamy texture and rich flavor. Whether enjoyed on a *Brettljause* (a traditional Austrian lunch platter), sprinkled over fresh salads, or paired with hearty farmhouse bread, this specialty adds the perfect finishing touch to any meal. Sheep's milk also shines in sweet creations. A true highlight is the sheep’s milk ice cream, crafted with care and expertise by Lake Wolfgang – a must-try for any foodie!

Zaunerstollen

The recipe for the famous Zaunerstollen from the historic Zauner Pastry Shop in Bad Ischl, developed 200 years ago, has been passed down through generations. This delicate creation of nougat, wafers, and hazelnuts, coated in fine chocolate, is a must-try treat. The recipe for the legendary Zaunerkipferl and many other cake secrets remain closely guarded within the family’s traditions to this day.
