Verona, with its rich history, ancient Arena, Romeo and Juliet and bustling squares is the starting point for your week of hiking. Stroll through the famous wine producing region of Valpolicella, characterised by fine wines and an enchanting atmosphere. Here, nature shows itself in spring with delicately blossoming cherry and peach orchards and in autumn with shining vine leaves and juicy grapes. You will encounter historic villas, castles and wine cellars before finally approaching Lake Garda, whose shores are dotted with beautiful little towns. Enjoy the charm of the unique landscape in a relaxed way, paired with Roman culture and Italian joie de vivre.

Whether on a hiking holiday in spring, summer, autumn or winter – this active holiday ensures Italian joie de vivre all year round. Enjoy the fantastic hiking paths, picturesque landscapes and wonderful vineyards between Verona and Bardolino at your own pace. The hilly Valpolicella region not only scores with an enchanting environment, but the area is a true Eldorado for wine lovers. You stay in traditional hotels, Italian country houses and cosy inns.

  • In the footsteps of Romeo and Juliet: Have you always wanted to visit the famous balcony of Romeo and Juliet? Right at the beginning of this hiking holiday you have the opportunity to do so. Where is the balcony located? At number 23 Via Cappello about 150 metres South of the Piazza delle Erbe and 750 metres East of the Verona Arena.
  • Culture in Valpolicella: There are many historical sights to discover en route. The Castel San Piedro in Verona, the Villa della Torre in Fumane or the Church of San Zeno in Bardolino are particularly worth seeing.
  • Wine pleasure between Verona and Lake Garda: On this hiking holiday you hike through the Valpolicella region, which is known for excellent wines. You can taste the fine wines in one of the wineries along the route. Also worth seeing is the wine museum ‘Museo dell’Vino’ in Bardolino, your final destination.
  • Even more adventures on Lake Garda: Extend your journey at the end of your trip - if you fancy even more impressions and experiences, an excursion to Sirmione on Lake Garda is definitely a fabulous option.

This seven-day hiking holiday is assigned our level of hiking ‘Moderate Walking’. With a basic fitness level, the daily stages of three to around six hours become an enjoyable experience. Well-developed hiking trails lead you through the picturesque landscape in the Valpolicella region.

Itinerary at a glance

From the impressive Piazza delle Erbe in Verona you hike through Valpolicella wine terraces, past beautiful gardens and historic Villas. To end you can enjoy the Mediterranean flair of Lake Garda.

Take a walk to explore Verona’s many worth-seeing sights such as the Arena and the balcony of Romeo and Juliet.

Hotel example: San Marco

To start your hike, we recommend a detour to Castel San Pietro, where you have a wonderful view of the whole city, the Valpolicella area and also Lake Garda. Along the Adige river past the seven bridges that connect the two river banks in the old town. As a former river port, Parona is the gateway to the wine region.

Hotel example: Corte Rondinella

Today's hike takes you into the heart of Valpolicella. Enjoy the scenic route through the vineyards and past numerous monuments of Romanesque architecture. You will pass through small villages such as Pedemonte, San Floriano and San Pietro in Cariano before arriving in Fumane.

Relax to your heart's content and stroll through the tranquil village. Visit the panoramic balcony of the mountain church or hike to the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Valverde and on to the small village of San Rocco. Afterwards, you should taste the best Amarone and Valpolicella in one of the countless wine cellars.

After a visit to the village of Gargagnago you hike to San Giorgio di Valpolicella, which towers over the landscape on a hill. When you visit the Pieve, a view of the Valpolicella vineyards awaits you on one side and a view of Lake Garda on the other. Via Ponton, the centre of marble processing, to Cavaion Veronese, very close to Lake Garda.

Take a leisurely hike in the direction of Lake Garda, where you will meet the picturesque village of Bardolino, a pearl on the sea, with the historic church of San Zeno and a harbour basin where it is lovely to linger over a glass of wine. For the overnight stay you will go to the famous Garda, one of the typical towns on the lake, perfect for relaxation and as a starting point for walks and excursions on the lake.
