From Verona to Lake Garda

Verena shares her experience

For my Team Member on Tour adventure, I’m once again drawn to my favorite travel destination, Italy. With my best friend by my side, we set off south, and within moments of hitting the road, we can both feel that this adventure is going to be something unforgettable. Back in 2016, during our school internship, we spent three incredible months in Garda, a picturesque town on the eastern shore. Since then, we’ve stayed in touch with our former colleagues, and now we’re eager to reunite with them and uncover the hidden gems of Lake Garda’s hinterland on foot.

Lago di Garda

Upon arriving in Garda, we make our way straight to the lakeside promenade, where we savor our favorite “Tagliatelle al Salmone” at our go-to restaurant. Bathed in warm sunlight, we watch the boats on the lake and observe the people leisurely strolling along the Lungo Lago. Afterward, we check into a comfortable accommodation in Garda, where we can leave the car parked for the entire duration of our hiking tour. From there, we take the bus to Verona, the true starting point of our adventure. In the evening, we wander through the charming old town and are even treated to a concert at the iconic Arena di Verona.

Verona – la città dell‘amore

The city, famously known as "La città dell’amore" (The City of Love), owes much of its charm to the timeless tale of Romeo and Juliet. Nestled between ancient buildings and a wealth of exceptional restaurants, you'll find the iconic balcony of Juliet's house. In addition to its rich history, Verona boasts the renowned Via Mazzini, lined with elegant shops and luxury fashion brands. Before departing this lively city, we indulge in a delightful cappuccino at a charming café by the Adige River.

Noble wine as far as the eye can see

The region around Lago di Garda is renowned for its wine and olive cultivation. Grape varieties such as Rondinella, Corvina Veronese, and Barbera thrive here. The hiking trails wind through the rolling hills and quaint villages, offering breathtaking views and the occasional ripe grape, which we can’t resist tasting. The grapes are perfectly ripe and incredibly sweet. We watch as the grapes are carefully hand-picked and loaded into crates on trailers. In the evening, a glass of the region's fine wine serves as the perfect aperitif.

Exceptional experiences

Along the way, we discover cultural treasures and peaceful spots, such as L’Eremo di San Roccheto. This Catholic sanctuary near Parona unexpectedly offers a truly special atmosphere. Initially, we sought shelter from the impending rain, but soon we felt that this place was a true source of energy. A personal highlight on the route from Fumane to Cavaion Veronese is the small village of San Giorgio. Nestled on a hill, it offers a breathtaking panorama, with Lago di Garda sparkling on the horizon. It’s the perfect spot for a refreshing break and a moment to catch our breath.

A hearty breakfast, pasta for lunch, or a delightful aperitif in the evening – enjoyment can be found not only in nature! While on the hunt for a light afternoon snack, we stumble upon the charming Agriturismo Val del Tasso. From the outside, it appears closed, but as we approach, the owner, Fabrizio, waves us over. We’re treated to a fresh coffee and take a seat together on the bench outside, soaking up the sun. We share the story of our hiking adventure and the days we've had so far. He listens intently, amazed that we’ve walked all the way from Verona to Garda.

Conclusion

This journey between the iconic city of Verona and the stunning Lago di Garda unveils numerous small towns, each with its own distinctive charm. While the villages offer charming restaurants and bars, we also recommend packing some provisions while there’s nothing quite like refueling with a freshly made panini filled with Prosciutto Crudo, surrounded by the vineyards. These simple moments of pleasure are what make the journey so unforgettable!

My favorite place

The final destination of this self-guided hiking tour from Verona to Lago di Garda, Lungolago Garda, is my personal favorite spot! Along the way, we discover many beautiful places, but from the very beginning, we have the stunning lake in sight. Whether sitting in one of the many restaurants, strolling through charming alleys and stylish boutiques, cooling off in the lake, or simply gazing into the distance—this place has everything the heart desires. It’s where people gather to enjoy life and create lasting memories. Not just in summer, but even in autumn, the lakeside promenade holds a special kind of magic. Arriving at the final stage of our hike in the rain, we pause for a moment, despite our soaked feet, taking in the crisp, refreshing autumn air and the breathtaking view of the lake.

Isabella tells the story

For my Team Member on Tour experience, I once again choose my dream destination—Italy, this time hiking from Verona to Lago di Garda. As always, my dear friends are by my side, having already joined me on the trails from Reschen to Kaltern and from Lago di Garda to Venice. The anticipation of finally embarking on our next adventure, from Verona to Lago di Garda, has been building for months, and the excitement couldn’t be greater!

Verona, here we come!

Verona is a city that’s new to us, so right after checking into our hotel, we set out to explore the charming old town, making sure to visit Romeo and Juliet’s balcony and Juliet’s statue. We wrap up our first evening at Ristorante Greppia, followed by a 3-hour opera at the Arena di Verona, all while eagerly anticipating an exciting hiking week ahead.

Our first hiking stage takes us, free of heavy luggage, through the historic streets of Verona, climbing steep stairways to Castel San Pietro, where we are treated to a breathtaking view of the entire city.

Energized, we continue along the Adige River toward Parona. We are entranced by the vineyards, orchards, olive groves, rustic farmhouses, and countless stunning Venetian villas, all nestled amid lush green plateaus, rushing streams, deep gorges, and impressive caves. A journey through the heart of Amarone country is truly fulfilling, and as the day winds down, a glass of this exquisite wine is the perfect way to conclude our adventure.

The culinary delights of Valpolicella

Those who take a good look around the Valpolicella region will have no trouble guessing its typical dishes, with vineyards, vegetable gardens, olive groves, orchards, and chestnut trees – the local, down-to-earth cuisine of Valpolicella is built on the products harvested from these fertile landscapes. The outstanding gastronomy truly satisfies every desire. In numerous restaurants, trattorias, and osterias, one can enjoy delectable dishes, mostly made from local ingredients, accompanied by excellent wines.

What we enjoyed most?

Without a doubt, the remarkable DIVERSITY of the hiking journey! The mindset, culture, and way of life of the people in the region, along with the local cuisine and wines, will remain with us as cherished memories for a long time.

My favorite place

The small pilgrimage church of Santa Maria de la Salette is my personal favorite spot on this Eurohike Original Tour! It dominates the village of Fumane and the vineyards of Valpolicella and can be reached via a somewhat steep path made up of long steps, accompanied by stones that should be carefully navigated from time to time. A spiritual journey before reaching the summit. Its unique location offers a breathtaking view of the vineyards surrounding Fumane.
