Johannisburg castle from the river side with small ship

The Spessart is a low mountain range and one of the largest forest areas in Germany - and an insider tip among hiking enthusiasts. The lush green nature and the slightly hilly terrain are framed by first-class hiking trails and numerous nature trails. Again and again you pass characteristic Franconian villages and small towns that could have come out of a storybook. Lace up your hiking boots, here we go!

The tour starts and ends in the charming town of Aschaffenburg. Sights worth seeing include Johannisburg Castle, the Pompejanum and the old town. The first stage destination along the Franconian Marian Way is Mespelbrunn. Known for its imposing moated castle, the small community is a delightful gem.

On day 3, a circular hike leads you through the Räuberland, where you walk in the footsteps of the former ‘Spessarträuber’ (robbers). If that doesn't promise action! The final stage takes you through dense forests up to the Geißhöhe at an altitude of 520 metres and the mighty Henneburg ruins.

  • On premium trails through the Spessart Nature Park: Immerse yourself in the unspoilt nature of this region, which literally casts its spell over you. The magnificent hiking trails and our carefully designed route guidance ensure a hiking experience in a class of its own.
  • Picturesque castles and parks: Whether the Henneburg, Johannisburg Castle or Mespelbrunn Castle - the imposing grounds bear witness to the historical importance of the region. Incidentally, the German film "Das Wirtshaus im Spessart" was filmed in Mespelbrunn moated castle, among other places.
  • Franconian hospitality and regional delicacies: Ever heard of "Blauen Zipfel" and "Bocksbeutel"? If not: these two things make a first-class combination that you should not miss - along with the other Franconian delicacies! Be sure to stop off at the numerous pubs, wine taverns and vesper stations. Incidentally, on the Geißhöhe already mentioned, there is a pub that has been family-owned for over 200 years and offers regional classics.
  • Enchanting half-timbered houses and medieval monasteries: Franconia has many special features, and the special architecture is certainly one of them. The neat half-timbering gives the villages their unique charm.
  • Pristine hiking trails through colourful deciduous forests: Nature paints unique pictures here. Among other things, the background to the Räuberland is interesting: at the end of the 18th century, many of the inhabitants of this region lived in poverty, which led to the formation of robber gangs. The forest in its density and darkness offered them the perfect hiding place.

The region's elevation profile is a gentle one due to its status as a low mountain range. Although the route is hilly, it is ideally suited for pleasure hikers. The 5-day variant of this tour is perfect for a short trip.

Itinerary at a glance

On the way through Franconia, you will hike through dense forests on the trail of the Spessartian robbers and even pass a film set in the imposing moated castle of Mespelbrunn - in addition, timber-framed houses, monasteries and monuments await you.

The ‚Hochspessart‘ awaits: along the Franconian Marienweg-path you ascend to the Posthalterkreuz-cross, past sandstone walls to the rural chapel Herrenbild. Dense forest surrounds you like a green cloak, little monuments and wayside crosses greet you en route. You proceed via a spectacular high-altitude path always along the hilltops, far below in the valley you can already make out the beautiful hamlet Mespelbrunn, your Day Finish situated in the heart of the Spessart-forest.

In the so-called ‚Räuberland‘ (land of bandits) you have endless opportunities to embark on short or extensive hiking tours in the surroundings. However, do not be afraid, you will only encounter bandits on the colorful waymarkings. Visit the legendary hut on top of the ‚Hohe Wart‘, inclusive beer garden and fresh Spessart-beer, located amidst the forest. Also visit the Mespelbrunn water castle, known through the German movie classic ‚Das Wirtshaus im Spessart‘ (the Inn in the Spessart). The quality of the hiking paths make every hiker’s heart leap for joy.

The finale of your hiking week is characterised once again by the forests of the Spessart: Via the ‚Old School Route‘, an historic connecting trail, you walk through a convoluted rock labyrinth until you reach the highest point of your hiking holiday at the Geißhöhe-peak. Unspoilt trails finally lead you on gently undulating terrain below the leaf canopy all the way to Henneburg castle, towering high above the glistening river Main, the crowning glory of the end of your hiking adventure in the Spessart.
