Travel Story Trans Tramuntana

Magdalena's Journey Through Majorca
Hiker looks out over the turquoise-blue bay of Coll de Baix

My first Team-Member-on-Tour hiking travel takes me to a hiking holiday on Majorca. Although I've visited the island before, I’m excited for this diverse hiking journey. Since becoming a Travel Specialist for this region at the start of the year, I've spent a lot of time getting to know the island. The more I learned about Majorca, the more captivated I became by its beautiful hiking areas. This growing fascination has only been fueled by the exceptionally positive feedback from our guests. On my last visit, I focused primarily on Majorca’s popular landmarks and well-known spots. That’s why I knew I had to return to the largest Balearic island, this time to explore its rugged landscapes and unique coastlines. It's the end of September, just before the season ends. My partner and I packed our bags and set off full of energy and anticipation for our hiking adventure in Majorca.

Majorca here we come!

fter a short flight, we arrive at Palma de Majorca Airport. Following the signs toward the exit, we’re immediately greeted by the sight of palm trees. During peak season, a bus (Line A32, heading to Can Picafort) offers a direct route from the airport to Port Alcudia, where our hiking tour begins. After an hour’s drive, we’re already enjoying our first freshly squeezed orange juice by the sea. The warm reception at the JS Sol hotel provides us with a thorough overview of the itinerary, and our printed travel documents are ready and waiting at the front desk. We’ll spend two nights in the tourist town of Port Alcudia, located in northeastern Majorca. A variety of restaurants, supermarkets, and pharmacies are within walking distance of the hotel, making it easy to prepare for the first hiking days. The expansive beach near the hotel especially beckons us to take a refreshing dip on our arrival day.

Views to melt your heart

Before embarking on our first hike, we attend a brief information session at the hotel. During this, they ensure that all travelers are familiar with the "Eurobike & Eurohike on Tour App," which will prove especially helpful on the first hiking day. After a short transfer to the starting point, we eagerly begin our six-hour stage. The gravel path ascends, and within just a few steps, we’re rewarded with a breathtaking view of the sea. For those in good shape, a detour to the Mirador Penya des Migdia is highly recommended. The "Eurobike & Eurohike on Tour App" guides us effortlessly to the viewpoint, making it an essential tool for this section of the trail. At the top, we’re greeted by an old cannon and a spectacular vista of Cap Formentor, the Bay of Alcudia, and, on clear days, even the neighboring island of Menorca. This view alone makes the challenging route more than worthwhile. To cap it all off, we’re treated to an amazing view of the Coll de Baix bay.

Tip: Be sure to bring plenty of water, a hat, and ankle-high hiking boots to ensure you're well-prepared for the long hiking stages.

Overnight Stay at the Lluc Monastery

After two nights in the tourist town of Port Alcudia, our next adventure begins. Today, we hike to the Lluc Monastery, a renowned pilgrimage site in the Serra de Tramuntana that attracts countless visitors each year. Most of this stage takes us through holm oak forests, making it ideal for hot days. We follow the entire route along the GR221 long-distance trail, which is well-marked throughout. Upon reaching the Lluc Monastery, we’re greeted by its expansive grounds. From the museum and church to the large park, there’s plenty to explore. The on-site restaurant, "Ca s'Amitger," is highly recommended. The staff is friendly, and the food is outstanding. In the evening, the monastery’s peaceful atmosphere provides the perfect setting to unwind and recharge for the next day. It’s a wonderful place to wrap up a successful hiking day.

The Impressive Tramuntana Mountains

Our hike continues deeper into the Tramuntana Mountains, where we encounter the famous Cuber and Gorg Blau reservoirs. Incredible photo opportunities await us, and the "Coll des Prat" pass is the perfect spot to pause and take in the views. At a high elevation, we’re treated to a breathtaking panorama of the Tramuntana Mountains. It’s no wonder this stage is often referred to as the "king’s stage." That’s why it’s wise to not only charge your phone but also pack a snack. Before reaching Port de Sóller, we enjoy one final glimpse of the Cuber Reservoir. At the "Coll de l'Ofre" pass, we’re treated to a stunning view back over the reservoir, the peaks of the Tramuntana, and Puig Major, Majorca’s highest mountain. Next, we take the optional route up to the "Puig de l'Ofre," which offers an even more spectacular view and an overwhelming sense of peace. Here, you can truly feel your thoughts clear, and a deep sense of arrival takes over. For this more challenging detour, the "Eurobike & Eurohike on Tour App" is highly recommended, as the route can be difficult to find without it.

Coastal Path from Deia to Sóller:

Arriving in Sóller, we step into the vibrant town center with its beautiful square and the famous tram. Just around the corner at Fet a Sóller, a refreshing orange ice cream awaits us—a perfect treat after the hike. Excited to continue, we head to Port de Sóller and our accommodation. After a warm welcome at the Hotel Boutique Minister, we spend the evening relaxing on the beach, conveniently located right in front of the hotel. The next day, our final hike awaits, leading us to Deia. This enchanting village marks the starting point of our journey. We set off toward Deia’s cove, following the rugged coastal path with breathtaking views of the sea. One last time, we take in the stunning scenery and stop for a break at the delightful finca Son Mico, renowned for their homemade cakes and freshly made lemonades—a stop well worth it! Before boarding the nostalgic Red Lightning train to Palma, we enjoy one last evening at our favorite spot: the restaurant Patiki Beach.

My favourite place

The restaurant Patiki Beach has charmed us not only with its unique location but also with its truly delightful food. You sit right on the beach, enjoying the view of the Port de Sóller bay. The staff is attentive and very helpful with the extensive menu. Depending on the catch of the day, various fish specialties are offered, which you can savor with a glass of wine. It’s a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy a peaceful evening.

An enchanting and wonderfully varied hiking journey has come to an end. We’re absolutely delighted and deeply impressed by the incredible treasures this once-famous party island has revealed to us. Over the past eight days, we’ve discovered so much of its beauty and charm. Now, with hearts full of unforgettable memories and photo galleries brimming with moments to treasure, we board the plane, already dreaming of our next adventure with Eurohike.
