Around Madeira

Spectacular hiking paradise on the island of flowers
Hiker pauses on a hiking trail in Madeira

I've made up my mind about this year's hiking vacation: I've long dreamed of exploring Madeira on foot, captivated by the blend of nature, mountains, coastline, and sea. Often called the Hawaii of Europe, Madeira’s dramatic shores and lush tropical forests are something I can’t wait to experience firsthand. Following mostly charming, narrow trails, our route will take us along rugged coasts, through enchanting forests, and across scenic high-altitude paths from Porta da Cruz to Funchal.

This adventure gives my partner and me the chance to discover every corner of this stunning Atlantic island on foot, with hikes spanning its entire expanse. The breathtaking floral displays, a hallmark of Madeira’s beauty, make the island even more extraordinary. Staying in exceptional accommodations, we can wind down each day right by the sea. Exploring the smaller villages along the way is also a must—an essential part of our experience.

From Boca do Risco to the Wild North Coast

After a hearty breakfast by the sea, two Eurohike team members greet us directly at the hotel, providing a detailed introduction to our hiking vacation. There's plenty of time to ask questions and clarify any last details before we set off. A short transfer brings us to the starting point of our hike. Even from the car, the island’s charm and vibrant floral diversity captivate us, heightening our anticipation to explore this breathtaking landscape on foot. As we begin, the trail quickly climbs, rewarding us with a spectacular view from above—turquoise waters stretching below, and a quaint village nestled along the shore. Being a passionate plant and flower enthusiast, I know within minutes that I’ve chosen the perfect tour.

We soon find ourselves weaving through a peaceful forest before the sea reveals itself once more on the other side. The path continues along the dramatic North Coast, where the sound of waves crashing far below echoes up to the trail. A light summer rain catches us a few kilometers in, but it does nothing to dampen the experience as this hike remains a standout. That evening, we unwind over dinner with a sunset view right by the sea creating the perfect ending to a remarkable first day. Already, we can’t wait for the adventures still ahead.

From the High Plateau through Misty Forests to the Volcanic Pools of Porto Moniz

Our third stage feels like yet another unforgettable adventure. We set off in the morning from the Paul da Serra plateau, following scenic forest trails and a few stone steps that lead us deeper into the dense woodland. Before long, we’re fully immersed in nature, surrounded by ancient laurel trees and exotic shrubs. At every turn, breathtaking views of Madeira’s mountains and forests unfold. Despite the beautiful weather, we encounter only a handful of fellow hikers, making it easy to soak in the tranquility of the landscape. A surprise encounter with a few curious cows along the path adds to the charm. The closer we get to Fanal, the more the forest transforms, with mist weaving through the gnarled trees and casting a mystical, almost otherworldly atmosphere, just like something pulled straight from the pages of a storybook. A truly magical place!

A Refreshing Experience in the Volcanic Pools of Porto Moniz

On this hot spring day, we can hardly wait to plunge into the lava pools after our hike. This invigorating cool-down is an experience we’d recommend to anyone! The pools sit right beside the ocean, with the rhythmic crash of waves filling the air. The view is simply stunning with crystal-clear, light blue water contrasting with the dark gray volcanic rock, where even a few red crabs can be seen basking in the sun.

Exotic Floral Diversity and Endless Levadas

Even as we approach the island, its beauty immediately captures our attention from the plane. On every single hike, we discover unique flowers with magnificent blooms, far larger than those back home. Even the rocks along the coastal paths are adorned with succulents and tropical plants, adding bursts of color to the landscape. Our constant companions are the so-called Levadas—man-made water channels built on Madeira to direct water from the wetter regions to the agricultural areas. We’re fortunate to be visiting during the "Festa da Flor" and experience this beautiful flower festival up close. Gigantic floats, adorned with all sorts of flowers, parade through the streets and along the promenades. Full of energy, we set off early in the morning once again. After a short well-organized transfer, we follow the Levadas once more, passing by gardens where a variety of flowers and fruits thrive.

The highlight of the day is enjoying the spectacular view from the Cabo Girão viewpoint. At 580 meters, it’s the highest sea cliff in Europe, and the visit is absolutely worth it. After several scenic kilometers, we reach the island’s capital, Funchal, by afternoon and our final stop on this unforgettable hiking journey. We wind down the evening with a leisurely stroll along the promenade, savoring the coastal atmosphere. The next morning, we take the cable car high above the city to begin our last hike. As always, the Levadas guide us along the trail. A few kilometers in, we stumble upon a small hut selling bananas for 40 cents—an irresistible treat. Their rich, sweet flavor, freshly harvested from the island, is incomparable to anything we’ve tasted back home. To conclude this incredible adventure, we visit the Botanical Garden, where towering cacti, vibrant flower fields, and a dazzling array of tropical plants create a picture-perfect finale to our hiking week.

Culinary Delights on Madeira

When it comes to cuisine, Madeira leaves nothing to be desired. The island offers a wide variety of dishes, with seafood being particularly popular. During dinner, we’re often served the famous garlic bread, which never fails to impress with its delicious flavor. A highlight for us is the bustling market in Funchal, which we explore on our final day. Strolling through the old town afterward, a colorful popsicle catches our eye—of course, we have to try it, and it turns out to be a delightful surprise. Naturally, we can't forget the iconic Pastel de Nata, Portugal’s beloved egg custard tarts. An absolute must-try!

My favourite place

The lava rocks of Porto Moniz, with the endless ocean stretching beyond them, have truly become my favorite spot on this Madeira adventure. From the very start, the island’s stunning turquoise waters have captivated me. Perched on the dark gray volcanic stone, I can fully immerse myself in the breathtaking view and the soothing rhythm of the waves. I could spend hours there, simply watching the gentle rise and fall of the tide. As the day fades, the sunset spilling its colors across the sea is nothing short of spectacular—an unforgettable moment that will surely stay with us for a long time.
