Alpine Cuisine from the Salzkammergut Region

Postalm chapel with a view of the Rinnkogel

The Postalm high plateau captivates not only with its breathtaking natural scenery and fresh mountain air but also with its many culinary delights. This article especially engages two of our senses: taste and smell.

For foodies, a hike through the picturesque Postalm region in the Salzkammergut is an absolute must. As the largest contiguous alpine pasture area in Austria and the second-largest high plateau in Europe, it boasts countless hiking trails that lead to rustic alpine huts and traverse an exciting natural landscape. The treasures of the forest and surrounding farms are freshly prepared by the proprietors to conjure up the most delicious dishes for you.

Got a taste for it? Experience the magic of the high plateau while hiking in the Salzkammergut, whether you're alone, with friends, or on an enjoyable hike with the whole family.

Tradition & Regionality

Rosserhütte

The starting point for every hike on the Postalm is the well-signposted parking lot at the highest point of the pass road between the Salzburg municipality of Strobl and the Tennengau municipality of Abtenau. From there, a rewarding detour awaits: after a leisurely twenty-minute walk, you'll reach the Rosserhütte with its inviting sun terrace.

The Abtenau "Heubalkrapfen" is a unique art form and a true delicacy of the Tennengau Lammertal. Its thin yeast dough is fried in hot fat until golden brown, forming a perfect circular shape. The preparation requires a lot of love and patience. Whether sweet, filled with homemade jams and compotes, or savory, accompanied by sauerkraut, the "Heubalkrapfen" offers not just a taste sensation but also a visual delight.

A treat for the senses

Pitschenbergalm

A true insider tip and my personal favorite alpine hut is the Pitschenbergalm. Located slightly off the beaten path, it's arguably the most colorful and rustic hut in the entire Postalm region. To reach it, you'll enjoy stunning views towards the Tennengebirge. After a gentle ascent in the shade of the forest, you'll soon spot the flower-adorned and quaint alpine cabin.

For all early risers, the best way to start your day is by hiking up the eponymous Pitschenberg mountain early in the morning and then enjoying a delicious breakfast. The homemade butter is a rare artisanal product crafted in the traditional way. The milk comes from cows peacefully grazing on pastures right in front of the hut's terrace when you arrive. It's pure nature at its finest.

Overnight amidst nature

Huberhütte-Postalm

What could be better than visiting a mountain hut? Of course - staying overnight! It's a real treat to experience the untouched nature and morning freshness in peace. On our High-Altitude paths, Lakes & Dachstein-Glacier Hiking Tour, you'll sleep in the cozy Huber Hut and have the opportunity to admire the starry sky on clear evenings. From the parking lot, a short walk across the meadow leads you directly there. A hearty lunch is essential on every hike. The wonderful terrace invites you to relax - here you can fully enjoy the alpine ambiance. Indulge in homemade alpine cheese, freshly baked sourdough bread with hearty smoked ham, and fresh cider, or fortify yourself for the next leg of your hike with a flavorful Kasspressknödel soup.

Mountain adventure with a sweet reward

Lienbachhof – Labenberghütte

The scent of fresh herbs and lush alpine meadows fills the air - the Lienbachhütte and the Labenberghütte are located side by side and are worth another detour to delight your taste buds. For those seeking a sporty adventure and heavenly mountain views, hiking to the summit of Labenberg is highly recommended.

In addition to the many delicacies for which the two alpine huts are known, the sweet Pofesen is probably one of the tastiest and most recommended specialties. Experience exceptional culinary delights on the Postalm mountain pastures.

Tip for all collectors & mushroom lovers

In summer and autumn, the Postalm plateau is perfect for collecting chanterelles and porcini mushrooms. But what makes this region so ideal for mushroom hunting?

The answer lies in a healthy microclimate. Cool temperatures and sufficient moisture promote mushroom growth. The soils are rich in both humus and nutrients, providing an ideal foundation for these natural delicacies to thrive. The dense forests of spruce, fir, and beech trees offer the necessary symbiosis to support mushroom growth. Additionally, the area is largely untouched by intensive agriculture, helping to keep nature intact. A true paradise for mushroom enthusiasts!

Back to the roots

Every year, my father and I embark on an Almenroas (alpine journey) to the Postalm. Once we reach the top, we indulge in seasonal delicacies, visit relatives, and enjoy the tranquility of the forest. One thing is certain: The Postalm is a place to unwind and catch one's breath, my personal sanctuary with true rejuvenating power.

My tip: Enjoy the evening sun at the romantic Postalm chapel, built and often visited by Empress Sissi. It's just a five-minute walk from the parking lot to admire the fiery red sunset against the impressive silhouette of the Rinnkogel mountain.

The blend of hiking adventure and culinary delights makes the Postalm region in the Salzkammergut a truly unique sensory experience.
