Hiking break with a view of Lake Fuorcla and mountain panorama in the background

The long distance hiking path of Via Albula Bernina leads along the UNESCO world heritage train line of the Rhaetian Rail. It runs as close as possible to the Albula and Bernina line and provides fascinating views that open out onto the 100 year old work of art in the magnificent alpine landscape. The first part of this walking trail brings you to Thusis and Albula Valley to Engadine with the world-famous skiing destination St. Moritz. You continue past the Bernina pass to Val Poschiavo and end your trip at the city of Tirano in Italy.

During this hiking holiday in Switzerland, you discover a more than 100-year-old work of art in the field of railway construction embedded in a magnificent alpine landscape. In eight days and six stages, the picturesque route takes you through the beautiful canton of Graubünden to Tirano in Italy. Fantastic distant views and scenery backdrops are your constant companions along the tour. A particularly impressive photo motif is the Landwasser Viaduct, the railway bridge with a height of 65 metres and a length of 136 metres on the railway line from Tiefencastel to Filisur.

  • UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway: In July 2008, the Albula and Bernina Line was recognised as UNESCO World Heritage. A real special feature, after all there are only two other railway lines that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Semmering Railway in Austria and the Mountain Railway of India.
  • Centuries of railway history: This hiking path along the Albula and Bernina line takes you along a true masterpiece of railway construction. The mountain railway was opened in 1896 and has overcome enormous differences in altitude of more than 5.000 metres since then.
  • Culture and cuisine of two countries: On our cross-border hiking holiday Via Albula & Bernina you will experience the best of the culture and cuisine of the two countries Switzerland and Italy.
  • Countless natural highlights: Along this hiking holiday, countless highlights in the stunning nature await you: the highest mountains in the canton of Grisons, an impressive glacier world, the Stazerwalk, Pontresina on the Bernina Pass, the crystal-clear Lake Palpuogna in the Albula Alps, as well as the 136-metre long Landwasser Viaduct.

This hiking holiday Via Albula & Bernina is assigned our level of hiking ‘Walking’. Daily stages are planned to take three to six hours and can be mastered with a good basic fitness level. Some of the hiking trails are narrow or a bit rocky, for which we recommend surefootedness and good shoes. Particularly pleasant: if you so wish, the hiking stages can also be shortened in parts by the Rhaetian Railway.

Itinerary at a glance

You'll hike along the routes of the Rhaetian Railway, crossing viaducts and bridges while enjoying the Alpine landscape, including glaciers, Lake Palpuogna, and the Stazer Forest. Your journey will eventually lead you to Tirano in beautiful Italy!

Arrival Thusis

A spectacular trail leads from Domleschg through the Schinschlucht gorge. The climb to the hamlet of Muldain is rewarded with spectacular views. The Solis viaduct and St. Peters church in Mistail dating from the 8th century form more highlights on this hike.

The second section leads to one of the highlights of the Via Albula/Bernina, the impressive Landwasser viaduct. Prior to this it runs alongside the foaming Albula river and then on the «Wasserweg ansaina» to a scenic spot for a souvenir photo of the world-famous RhB Rhaetian Railway viaduct. You then continue past Filisur with its historic village centre. Passing the tanzenden Hexen von Bellaluna (dancing witches of Bellaluna) the trail leads up to the well-kept, historic railway station at Stugl. Finishing point at Bergün with its Engadin houses, a mecca for railway enthusiasts.

Hike through a true masterpiece of engineering. The mountain hike follows the banks of the Albula river, and several times crosses the railway line, which along this stretch features the boldest of railway routes. The Bahnerlebnisweg (Railway experience trail) illustrates this 100-year-old railway engineering feat.Past Preda, the mountain hike leads past the crystal-clear Palpuogna lake, over Weissenstein Alp or Crap Alv up to the Fuorcla Crap Alv (2466 m altitude) and steeply down into Val Bever to the idyllic stage destination of Spinas. From here by train to St.Moritz.

By train you reach Morteratsch, where you hike through moorland and alpine pastures to the Bernina Pass. Here one highlight follows the other: Stazerwald, Pontresina, Glacier World, watershed Lago Bianco-Lej Nair and the highest mountains in Graubünden. After Lago Bianco, colored white by the glacier water, to the fantastic viewpoint Sassal Mason with a view of Piz Palü with its almost tangible glacier, the heart-shaped Lagh da Palü, Alp Grüm and the Val Poschiavo.

Steep descend towards Seebodenalp, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Swiss mountains. Take a break in the mountain hut. If you want, you can shorten today’s hike by cable car down to Küssnacht am Rigi. From there you get back to Luzern by ship.

Along the way, the massive curved Brusio viaduct will amaze you. The varied route leads through orchards, chestnut groves and vineyards to Italy. S. Perpetua in Tirano gives an excellent overview of the Mediterranean landscape and the town with its venerable palazzi.
