Rock path Bürgenstock above Lake Lucerne

Loop tour Lake Lucerne

Panoramic trails in the heart of Switzerland

7 Days / 6 Nights
Mountain Hiking
Rock path Bürgenstock above Lake Lucerne

Standing on the shores of Lake Lucerne, you will be truly inspired by the magical atmosphere. The view of the towering mountains all around, one or two of which are covered in snow almost every season, is simply magnificent. The lake glistening in the light of the sun or immersed in a mystical veil of mist when it rains. And if you're lucky, you'll see one of the historic paddle steamers making their rounds on the lake. Join us on this tour, because not only the lake is a special place, but also the mountain world that surrounds it.

Lucerne is the capital of the canton of the same name in central Switzerland and perfectly located for the start of our tour. Tip: Walking over the Chapel Bridge to the Water Tower is a real must. We set off in the direction of Pilatus, the city's local mountain at 2,128 metres. The stage leads from the pass steeply downhill to the Alpnachersee lake and into Alpnachstad.

On the "wildlife observation trail" you will see magnificent panoramas and, with a bit of luck, black grouse and ibex; in any case, you will get interesting information on the wildlife of the region. The Lake of Uri and, as an insider tip, the Risleten Gorge are just waiting to be explored by you on day 4, before you head for the Rigi, the queen of the mountains, with imposing views and first-class hiking trails.

  • Lucerne is almost kitsch, so beautiful are the alleys of the old town, the promenade along the lake and the sights around the water tower and the Lion Monument. It's not only children who get their money's worth at the Transport Museum, adults also enjoy the exhibition of the numerous means of transport. Those who like to go shopping will find numerous great shops in the new town.
  • The fjord-like Lake Lucerne is somewhat reminiscent of the landscapes of Norway. Yet the climate here is so mild that it is inviting for hiking and swimming. Whether by boat, wakeboard or by jumping into the clear water - enjoy the cooling waters of this special place.
  • Swiss nature like a picture book: Rustic huts, lush alpine pastures, contented grazing cattle alongside steep mountain slopes, rocky paths and imposing gorges - the natural scenery of central Switzerland is so wonderfully unspoilt and therefore perfect for switching off.
  • Traditional Swiss delights: Culinarily, everyone gets their money's worth here! A typical dessert, for example, is the Birewegge, a yeast pastry with dried pear filling.

The stages with lengths between 11 and 21 kilometres are supplemented by cable car and boat trips - so a varied trip with a route that we have worked out in the best possible way is guaranteed.

  • From Mont Blanc to Ticino - Switzerland offers hiking highlights galore. Information on the various regions and tours can be found here.

Itinerary at a glance

Walk in Lucerne to the Water Tower and watch the paddle steamers on Lake Lucerne, which resembles a Norwegian fjord. Treat yourself to Birewegge, a local pastry, and marvel at the mountain landscapes of Central Switzerland.

Thanks to its attractions, its souvenir and watch shops, the beautiful lakeside setting and the nearby excursion mountains of the Rigi, Pilatus and Stanserhorn, Lucerne is the perfect starting point for your hike round Lake Lucerne.

Today’s leg leads via Horw peninsula to Mount Pilatus. Steep passage over the Renggpass, the only overland link to Obwalden in the 1860s before the construction of the Brunigstrasse.

By bus to Dallenwil and with the cable car up to Niederrickenbach. This leg leads on the well-known “wildlife path» on the mountain flanks of Schwalmis and Oberbauen. You reach Niederbauen and go by cable car down to the same placed village.

Down towards the shores of Lakes Lucerne and through the refreshingly cool gorge on the Urnersee lake - along the lakeshore road to Risleten and a climb through the attractive Risletenschlucht gorge. Crossing of the Stützberg along the historic path to Volligen and arrival in Rütli, with views down to the Urnersee lake. From here by ship to Brunnen.

Another cable car brings you up on Mount Urmiberg. From here you continue via Gätterlipass on well-developed trails towards Rigi Kaltbad.

Steep descend towards Seebodenalp, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Swiss mountains. Take a break in the mountain hut. If you want, you can shorten today’s hike by cable car down to Küssnacht am Rigi. From there you get back to Luzern by ship.
