View of the idyllic village of Morcote in Ticino

When Italian flair meets Swiss closeness to nature and cosiness, we would see that as the best prerequisites for a successful hiking holiday! Where can you find that? In Ticino, of course, the southernmost canton of Switzerland. The surrounding Italy shapes the landscape, the attitude to life and of course the cuisine here. We have dedicated a 7-day tour to this impressive region, where beautiful mountain panoramas, lively villages and sparkling lakes await you.

The tour starts in the capital of Ticino: Bellinzona. Treat yourself to a shopping spree in the Mediterranean old town and perhaps a typical pasta dish afterwards to fill up your stores before the hikes. The first stage is steep but you will be rewarded with panoramic views. With views of Lake Maggiore, the route leads to Isone. Incidentally, this is where the special forces of the Swiss army are trained.

Via the Denti della Vecchia, day 4 takes you to Monte Bré, where an incredibly beautiful view of Lugano and the lake of the same name opens up. The rack railway finally takes you down into the valley. Vico Morcote and Serpiano are the next destinations, but the hiking trails in between could not be more picturesque. On the final day, it's once again high up to Monte San Giorgio.

  • Moonlit flair on Lake Lugano: Be sure to take plenty of time to stroll along the palm-lined lakeside promenade in Lugano. The view of the lake, the surrounding mountains and the villages within is simply magical - especially at sunset.
  • Take a look at the Middle Ages in Bellinzona: The imposing fortifications that characterise the image of one of Switzerland's southernmost towns are among the most important in the entire Alpine region. No less than three castles make up the massive complex, and museums in each of them tell the interesting story.
  • Explore the peaks of the region: Whether Monte Bigorio, Monte Bré or Monte San Salvatore, the hikes here lead through varied nature and offer grandiose panoramas. Stop and take a deep breath - it will do you good!
  • Admire 230 million-year-old dinosaur fossils: Monte San Giorgio (a UNESCO World Heritage Site, by the way) is considered a "fossil mountain". Dense forests, caves and a nature trail await visitors. Some of the most important fossil finds are exhibited in the museum in Meride.

The hiking stages through Ticino are not too long at 10 to 13 kilometres, but the ascents and descents are steep in places and therefore not to be underestimated. You enjoy numerous inclusive services on this tour, including the Ticino ticket. Mountain railways and boat trips as well as entrance fees, e.g. to the fossil museum, are already included in the tour price.

Itinerary at a glance

In Ticino, you'll savor Italian influences in culture, cuisine, and while strolling along the promenade in Lugano. The region's peaks offer breathtaking views, and Monte San Giorgio is renowned for its dinosaur fossils.

The skyline of the capital of Ticino, comprising three of the best-preserved medieval castles in Switzerland, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bellinzona is strategically positioned where the valley narrows at the southern entrance to the Alpine passes and is probably Switzerland's most Italianate town.

Steep climb to Cima di Dentro with views of Piano di Magadino and Lago Maggiore. Take one last look at the castles of Bellinzona before you walk down towards Isone.

First through the swamp at Gola di Lago and then further on through a sea of ferns in a sparse birch forest towards Bigorio. Santa Maria Franciscan monastery like an eagle’s nest above Tesserete.

In the morning transfer to Cimadera. The tour leads past the Denti della Vecchia rock formations over the Monte Boglia, through beech forests and high plateaux to Monte Bré, a vantage platform high above Lugano. The furniculaire takes you down to the city centre.

The hike from Monte San Salvatore to Vico Morcote is a classic for the whole family. Always slightly downhill, woodlands alternating with well-kept villages, pretty grotti and scenic views. From Morcote you continue by ship and cable car to Serpiano.

The Monte San Giorgio, also known as the «Fossil Mountain», is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, tackled after a short boat trip. Dinosaur fossils dating back 230-240 million years can be marvelled at in a small museum in Meride.
