Set forth on your hiking expedition from the charming town of Zermatt, where the awe-inspiring silhouette of the iconic Matterhorn looms over the landscape, captivating the hearts and minds of seasoned hikers and casual adventurers alike. En route to the Europahütte, prepare to ascend not only in altitude but also to traverse the iconic Charles Kuonen suspension bridge. Throughout the journey, magnificent vistas of the Swiss Alps accompany you, casting a spell of awe and enchantment. From Grächen to Gruben, the stages are adorned with panoramic mountain views, ensuring a truly unforgettable experience.

On the fifth day of your hike, traverse the Meid Pass and find respite from the day's exertions at the charming Hotel Weisshorn. Switzerland's hiking trails not only unveil impressive mountain panoramas but also lead you through picturesque valleys like the Val d'Anniviers, adding to the enchantment of your journey. The final leg guides you through the Val d'Hérens to Evolène, where a short bus ride transports you to Sion, the culmination of your hiking adventure. Treat yourself to Swiss chocolate or cheese - after your rewarding trek, you've certainly earned both!

While traversing this engineering marvel may not be suitable for the faint-hearted, the experience is undoubtedly nothing short of spectacular, offering unparalleled views and a thrilling sense of adventure!

01
Arrival in Zermatt

Today a beautiful panoramic view awaits you. The challenging high-altitude trail leads above the Mattertal to the longest suspension bridge in Europe. The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge offers impressive views of the massive summit of the Weisshorn. Afterwards, you reach your accommodation for the night in Europahütte.

After a restful night in the hut, hike along beautiful paths to Grächen, a charming mountain village. Located at around 1.600 meters, it enchants with a breakthtaking landscape, views of the most famous mountain ranges and Swiss hospitality.

A bus will take you to St. Nicholas. From there you take the cable car to Junge. The hamlet towers like an eagle's nest above the deepest valley in Switzerland. Here, a magnificent view of the Mischabel mountains and the cathedral opens up to you. After a short rest, you continue on an old trade route into the beautiful Turtmann Valley.

The Meidpass situated at 2,800 metres lies ahead of you on this hiking day. You tackle this ascent and are rewarded with an enchanting view of the Bishorn and Weisshorn. Your accommodation, the historic Hotel Weisshorn, high above the Val d'Anniviers, promises enchanting nights.

You hike along the Pointes de Nava, from where you descent to the Val d'Anniviers. Numerous, fantastic views of the Matterhorn open up along the way. Once in Grimentz, take the cable car to Bendolla. From there, you will head to Cabanne des Becs de Bosson.

Your hike ends today with a long descent into the Val d'Hérens. You walk past the Alps L'A Vieille and Vlovron, which make this tour so picturesque. Across pastures and through forests you reach the small village of Evolène. A bus takes you to Sion.

For the Europaweg you need surefootedness and be free from fear of heights. You will also hike over high passes on the following days. This requires excellent physical conditions and experience in hiking in alpine terrain.

  • Return journey by train from Sion. To Geneva by train in approx. 2 hours, to Zurich by train in approx. 2,5 hours (change once).
