Women hikers on a secured hiking trail along rock faces on the Lötschberg south ramp

Of course we love all of our hiking tours, but this one is simply a must for lovers of getting around on foot. The Lötschberg South Ramp and the Aletsch Panorama Trail can equally be named as classics of the hiking world. But they are by no means dusty, quite the opposite: glaciers, suspension bridges, viaducts and of course brilliant views await!

At the start, the tour leads along the Lötschberg railway to the Bietschtal bridge and over a first suspension bridge to Ausserberg. The historic village centre with its wooden houses is well worth a walk. With a view of the Baltschieder Viaduct, hike towards Naters and from Blatten up to Belalp. By the way, you are in the UNESCO World Heritage region "Jungfrau-Aletsch".

One of the stages is dedicated to the Aletsch Glacier. You hike through the nature reserve of the Aletsch forest, which holds a certain fascination not only because of the great views of the glacier. The ancient larches and stone pines create a special atmosphere. The most impressive panoramas await you on the stage from Riederalp to Fiescheralp. The Märjelensee lake, the Goms mountains, the Fieschergletscher glacier and the "Aspi-Titter" are the numerous attractions on the last kilometres.

  • First-class panoramas: Magnificent views await you on this trip from day 1. Stop at the Bärgji-Alp and soak up the alpine mountain world with sugar-topped peaks. The highlights of the trip are certainly the two glaciers Aletsch and Fiescher, which can be enjoyed from all angles.
  • The historic Suonen trails: The area around the Lötschberg south ramp scores with numerous hours of sunshine. In the past, it was all the more important to supply the area with water. Elaborate waterways were built for this purpose - the Suonen.
  • The imposing Aletsch Glacier: 23 kilometres long and over 80 square kilometres in size, the Aletsch Glacier is the largest in the Alps. Its constant movement is fascinating, but it too suffers from glacial melt.
  • The "Aspi-Titter" - a 160-metre-long suspension bridge - awaits at the foot of the Fiescher Glacier. At a height of 120 metres, the bridge swings very gently back and forth. While you should not suffer from giddiness, you will experience an incredible feeling of freedom when crossing the bridge.

While most stages are between 10 and 12 kilometres long, day 3 requires 21 kilometres. Allow plenty of time for the steep sections and be sure to take plenty of rests to savour the spectacular views.

Arrival in Gampel-Steg

Today, a panoramic high-altitude trail awaits you right at the beginning on the Lötschberg south ramp. The popular hiking classic first follows the railroad tracks of the Lötschbergbahn to the imposing Bietschtal bridge. From there a magnificent Suonenweg (historic water transport) leads to a suspension bridge. Enjoy the beautiful views, especially at Brägji and Riedgarten and a longer rest is worthwhile. From there you take the train from Ausserberg to Brig.

An impressive view of the Baltschieder viaduct of the Lötschbergbahn lies ahead of you. You pass pipes over and over again, which serve to irrigate the dry southern slopes in this region. The museum of the Swiss Guard is also certainly worth a visit. From Naters you continue either on foot or by bus to Blatten and from there by cable car up to Belalp.

From the Aletschbord you enjoy the best view of the glacier gate and the lower part of the Aletsch Glacier. Over a suspension bridge your path leads into the Aletsch forest with its centuries-old Swiss stone pines, which are under nature protection. Like an eagle's nest, the Riederfurka with the Villa Cassel sits on a ridge in the middle of this magnificent Valais mountain world.

Several highlights are on your day's program: To the north, the panoramic view of the Aletsch Glacier, the imposing centerpiece of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and to the south, the snow-capped peaks of the Valais four-thousand-meter peaks impressively tower into the sky. Descend to Lake Märjelen on good trails. Watch nature gradually change around you, the path is lined with cotton grasses and  small lakes form a contrast to the rocks and ice.

On old alpine paths you descend to the "Burg", a glacier-perforated rock massif made of gneiss, framed by the Goms mountains in the background. Already from afar you can see the glittering of the Fiescher glacier and at the end of your impressive hiking week you pass the 160 meter long suspension bridge "Aspi-Titter", an unforgettable experience! In the idyllic Goms mountain village Bellwald you will spend the night in the middle of the Swiss mountains once more.
