Circular hike on the Pico de las Nieves with a view of the Roque Nublo

The Camino del Guanche is a historic hiking trail on the Canary Islands that spans La Gomera, Tenerife, La Palma, and Gran Canaria. It follows the traditional routes of the island's indigenous people, the Guanches. The trail leads through spectacular landscapes and historical sites, remote villages, traditional culture, and lush nature. Treat your soul to a break—Gran Canaria is the perfect place for it!

On Gran Canaria, hiking is a pleasure, especially during the breaks where Maspalomas awaits your visit. The journey begins with a hike into the Barranco de Vicentillos gorge. On the way to Tunte, you'll walk along the Camino de Santiago, traversing ravines and the island's unique flora. On Day 4, you'll ascend the mountain to Cruz de Tejeda, where breathtaking panoramas and the famous Roque Nublo await you.

The next day, you’ll follow the enchanting water route to El Hornillo—named after the three sparkling lakes you’ll encounter. As you journey through the Barranco de Agaete valley, a stunning array of unique flora and fauna will captivate your senses. The charming village of the same name beckons you to linger a little longer and soak in its delightful atmosphere. Your vacation concludes on a warm and cozy note, allowing you to revel in the breathtaking panoramas one last time, leaving you with memories to cherish forever.

  • A photo with the Roque Nublo: The Roque Nublo is a unique and iconic basalt monolith, standing majestically in the geographical center of Gran Canaria at an elevation of approximately 1,813 meters above sea level. As one of the island's highest natural landmarks, it was formed through volcanic activity and rises about 67 meters high. Its striking presence captivates visitors and serves as a symbol of the island’s stunning natural beauty.
  • Tranquil nature in the Barranquo de Agaete: The valley is renowned for its spectacular landscape, characterized by deep gorges, steep cliffs, lush vegetation, and terraced farmland. One of the highlights of the Barranco de Agaete is its rich flora, featuring a variety of fruit trees such as mangoes, oranges, and lemons, along with the famous coffee plantations. In fact, this is where the only coffee grown in Europe is produced, right in the Valle de Agaete. The unique combination of climate and terrain creates a truly special environment for both agriculture and exploration.
  • Explore the center of Gran Canaria at Cruz de Tejeda: Cruz de Tejeda is a well-known and historically significant pass on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria. Situated at an elevation of about 1,560 meters above sea level, it marks a geographical center of the island. The name "Cruz de Tejeda" translates to "Cross of Tejeda" in English, referring to the large stone cross that stands there, which has become a popular photo spot for visitors. This area not only offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes but also serves as a reminder of the island's rich history and culture.

During your holiday, you'll kick off each day with a delicious breakfast before embarking on your daily adventures. The trails are beautifully maintained, but having surefootedness is still essential.

01
Arrival in Maspalomas

You walk northwards uphill until you come across markings for the so-called "Camino de Santiago de Gran Canaria". Follow this path through the Barranco de Vicentillos ravine and on to the valley of the aborigines with the necropolis of Arteara and countless small plantations with tropical trees. From there, a transfer takes you back to Maspalomas.

Short drive to Arteara, where you pick up the Way of St. James to Tunte again. This fairly leisurely stage takes you into the interior of Gran Canaria, characterized by ravines and succulents. You have the opportunity to visit the 17th century parish church of San Bartolomé with its magnificent baroque façade. Tunte is home to the interpretation center of "La Fortaleza", a symbolic enclave of the Guanches' resistance against the Spanish conquerors.

Today's stage takes you up to the summit area to Cruz de Tejeda, over 1,500m high above the sea. From there you have a spectacular panoramic view over a large part of the island, including the Roque Nublo, one of Gran Canaria's most famous natural symbols. From your accommodation, it is not far to the Parador Cruz de Tejeda, an excellent vantage point over the west of Gran Canaria.

The path to El Hornillo is part of the GR131, which is also known as the water route. Once you have left Artenara behind you, the descent is accompanied by lush green vegetation and passes three reservoirs: Presa de Soria. Presa de Las Niñas and Presa de Chira. Once you reach El Hornillo, a tiny mountain village, you will find yourself on the western side of the Gran Canaria massif, a very sunny area with frequent winds.

Your hike takes you down into the Barranco de Agaete valley, where coffee is grown thanks to the fertile soil. Many other tropical and subtropical fruit trees line your path. The village of Agaete has a pleasant colonial atmosphere with old manor houses and a beautiful central square. Your GR131 route ends a little further on in the picturesque Puerto de Agaete. A place that invites you to relax after the eventful days of your hiking tour.
