Numerous walking magazines describe the Dolomite high route as one of the most beautiful long distance hiking trail as the fascinating scenic impression of the world famous Dolomites is awaiting you on every single section. The route leads through three language areas and cultures: starting in the German-speaking Pustertal, leading through the Ladin-speaking Fanes area and southern of Passo Falzàrego finally the Italian language is dominating. Discover the bizarre world of wonders in all its facets: diversified scenic beauties, great views, wonderful steep tracks and pure adventure – enjoyment for every hiker! All facts and details about hiking in the Alps at a glance.

On this mountain hiking holiday you experience the impressive Dolomites up close. In seven days and five hiking stages, the route leads you from the South Tyrolean villages of Niederdorf/Toblach to St. Vigil, Abtei und St. Kassian all the way to Cortina d’Ampezzoni in the Veneto and finally back to the starting point of your hiking tour in Niederdorf. What awaits you here will remain in your memory for a long time: great views and summit panoramas, picturesque alpine scenery and stunning hiking paths in the Dolomites, a World Heritage Nature Site. You will experience three cultural- and language areas in Italy.

  • Mountain Lake in Alta Badia: Lake Lagazuoi in South Tyrol, teeming with fish, is located at an altitude of around 2.180 metres and is so crystal-clear that even the impressive peaks of the Fanes-Dolomites are reflected in it.
  • South Tyrolean Specialities: There is enough time to taste the wonderful South Tyrolean specialities on this mountain hiking tour. On the hiking stage from Abtei to St. Kassian, you hike across alpine meadows with traditional rest stops which serve particularly tasty regional specialities.
  • Cortina d'Ampezzo: On the fifth day of your hiking holiday you reach the famous ski resort Cortina d’Ampezzo at 1224 metres above sea level, located in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Veneto.

This hiking holiday is assigned our level of hiking ‘Mountain Hiking’. You will experience the bizarre mountain world of South Tyrol and the Veneto along well-marked hiking paths, partly also on via ferratas. A good basic fitness level, surefootedness and a head for heights are required. Particularly relaxed: some of the hiking stages can be shortened by taking a cable car ride or a bus ride, for instance.

Itinerary at a glance

Take out your camera at Lake Lagazuoi near Alta Badia, where the Dolomites are reflected in the water, and soak up the alpine flair in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The stops are particularly tasty, for example at the Fojedöra alpine pasture.

Arrival in Niederdorf/Toblach

By Bus to the lake Pragser Wildsee. Starting from the so-called ‚Pearl of lakes in the Dolomites‘ you proceed through the romantic region of the Fanes–Sennes–Prags nature park, which is one of the largest protected regions in South Tyrol. You reach the high-altitude alp ‚Hochalm Fojedöra‘ in the shade of the impressive Seekofel-massif, ready for a rest and a break. You continue through the remote high-altitude valley past the lake Hochalpensee all the way to St. Vigil.

From St. Virgil by cable car Piz de Plaies you reach the start of the hiking tour. The route leads you through a beautiful wooded and grassy area to the Piz de Corn, the Peitlerkofel is towering on the opposite side. Onwards to the ridge Ritjoch and you walk through the mountaineers village of Wengen. The mighty flanks of the Heiligkreuzkofel remain constantly in your view. At the refuge Heiligkreuz you descend again and then take a leisurely train ride to Abtei. At the end of the hike, you will take a transfer to St. Kassian.

Today's circular hike takes you from San Cassiano/St. Kassian up to Piz Sorega and on across idyllic alpine meadows, where you will find numerous places to stop for a bite to eat with local specialties. After your well-deserved break, you then head towards Pralongià and finally back to your overnight accommodation in San Cassiano/St. Kassian.

Today the trail runs leisurely at the beginning along the valley floor to Capanna Alpina. In the shadow of the majestic Fanes and Conturines peaks, follow the path to the Scottoni refuge. Through a rocky gorge, directly to the pearl of Alta Badia, Lake Lagazuoi. In the crystal clear water of the small mountain lake, the bizarre peaks of the Fanes Dolomites are reflected. Your hike continues along the Dolomites High Trail to the Lagazuoi Pass, which was literally turned into a fortress with tunnels and protective trenches by soldiers during the First World War. You can now decide whether to take the cable car directly from the summit to the Falzarego Pass and take the bus to Cortina, or you can continue hiking below the Tofanen to Pocol.

The trail leads through woodland and meadows, initially in a relatively leisurely manner, to the Rifugio Mietres, from where you can take a last look at Cortina. A fantastic panorama at the highest point will soon make you forget the efforts of the ascent. Then only downhill through the idyllic Val Padeon to the end point of the stage in Ospitale. Return to Alta Pusteria by bus.
