The colourful houses of Manarola in a rocky bay

Cinque Terre

Liguria’s picturesque coast

8 Days / 7 Nights
Walking
The colourful houses of Manarola in a rocky bay

Liguria’s coastline is one of the most beautiful walking areas in Italy. Multi-coloured houses clinging on to steep slopes, small squares with colourful boats on the sea, winding little alleyways and paths with stairs. Above the holiday resorts along the sea you find unspoilt and primeval landscapes with cute little mountain villages, olive groves, vineyards and winding mule trails. Hence it comes as no surprise that Cinque Terre is considered one of the most popular regions for walking in Europe: Nowhere else along the Italian mainland coast did the landscape and villages remain so well preserved. There is an extensive network of mule trails – today used as walking paths – leading you through exceptional scenery.

After arriving in Camogli, the hiking holiday begins with a tour to a secluded bay. There you find the Gothic monastery of San Fruttuoso, which is a picture-perfect photo opportunity. After the visit, follow the hiking trails to Portofino, a picturesque coastal town. Halfway through the hiking week, a route awaits you, which is considered an absolute insider tip. Between Sestri Levante and Moneglia you will find inclined slopes and wonderful natural impressions. In addition, the promontory from Punta Manara to Riva Trigoso is not far away.

  • Portofino: The idyllic fishing village on the Italian Riviera is the place for the rich and famous. Holiday makers can therefore admire numerous yachts and boats in the small harbour every year.
  • Monerosso: it is essential to unpack the camera on Day 5. After a small pass you get to Levanto and then to Monterosso. An enchanting village with colourful houses right by the sea.

You always have the sea in view on the Cinque Terre hiking holiday in Liguria. In eight days you explore the coast of Italy and will be surprised with one panorama after the next. Nevertheless, surefootedness and a good basic fitness level are an advantage. The paths are sometimes rocky and narrow and lead you through the Italian villages with walking times of 3 to 6 hours.

Itinerary at a glance

The Cinque Terre showcases the most beautiful aspects of Liguria, whether in the charming village of Monterosso, Chiavari, or at the lighthouse at Punta Mesco. Rub shoulders with high society in Portofino, where their yachts dock in the harbor.
Day
01
Arrival in Camogli

From Camogli walk to the Gothic monastery San Fruttuoso, located in a secluded bay. Other options are a more challenging tour high above the sea or on easier terrain via the foothills of Portofino. Along the path leading from San Fruttuoso enjoy fabulous views onto the especially pretty fishing village of Portofino.

From Rapallo take the bus up to the pilgrimage church Montallegro, situated 600 metres above sea level. After a high-altitude walk with distant views across the Golf of Tigullio, you reach the ancient little town of Chiavari. After that take the train into the picturesquely situated little town of Sestri Levante.

The walk between Sestri Levante and Moneglia is an absolute insiders’ tip! Enjoy unforgettable impressions of nature along this remote coastal scenery with its precipitous slopes towards the sea. First you walk across the foothills of Punta Manara to Riva Trigoso, then continue below Monte Moneglia into the lovely seaside resort of Moneglia.

In the morning you start off by walking from Framura to Bonassola. After that the path leads you over a little mountain pass onwards to Levanto, your residence for the next three days. Then you continue along a panorama path to Monterosso, a picturesque little village with colourful houses situated directly at the sea. From the lighthouse on the Punta Mesco overlook the whole of the impressive Cinque Terre region for the first time.

On today’s agenda is the classic tour amongst all Cinque-Terre paths: the route between Monterosso and Corniglia. This coastal landscape with its old villages and steep vineyards has remaind nearly unchanged for centuries now. Again and again amazing views unfold infront of you onto terrraced vineyards, lemon and olive groves, farm houses and colourful villages.

The tour from Riomaggiore to Portovenere is the final highlight and tops off your week of walking. Walk leisurely through terraced vineyards and pine forests. Be amazed by the picturesque little town of  Portovenere with its multi-coloured houses. Weather permitting, you then take a boat ride along the Cinque-Terre coast back to Monterosso and can spot the walking routes of the past few days from the sea.
