Hiker with a view of the Wetterstein mountains

An inexhaustible selection of peaks, mountain trails and cosy mountain huts: the trekking tour on the Tyrolean Trail between Garmisch and Innsbruck leaves nothing to be desired. You cross the national park Karwendel up to the Nordkette, where you float with a cable car down to the Innsbrucker valley. Fresh mountain air, high alpine flora and fauna and great panoramas accompany you on this hike.

Mountain enthusiasts and experienced hikers will feel at home on the Tirolerweg. The eight-day trekking tour through the Wetterstein and Karwandel mountains can hardly be surpassed in terms of variety: wildly romantic mountain scenery, blooming alpine landscapes, snow-covered glaciers and rocky edges frame the journey. Spend two days in the deepest Karwendel mountain range – on the Halleranger Alm. Not only does the Isar spring from it, but the Alm is also home to the 2,331-metre-high Sunntiger Spitze. At the top you will find a peak overlooking the surrounding mountains. A challenging hike to create unforgettable memories!

  • Impressive ridge and mountain trails: The daily tours run through imposing gorges and dizzying heights. Vast views of the surrounding mountains are guaranteed!
  • Karwendel National Park: It’s difficult to make a choice. Countless beautiful places and hiking trails are in the Karwendel. Whether the Großer Ahornboden, the Gleirschklamm or the Hafelekar, let yourself be enchanted by the mountain panorama of Tyrol.
  • King Ludwigs Schachen Castle: From the outside it’s rather simple, but the castle houses splendid rooms inside. Be amazed!

The hiking tour begins in the province of Tyrol with the German neighbours. After an overnight stay we start the day from Garmisch-Partenkirchen with a circular hike to the Höllentalklamm gorge at the foot of the Zugspitze. On day two you reach the Wetterstein Mountains and the imposing Schachen Castle. The hike to Scharnitz especially, will make any mountaineers heart fly. From rocky landscapes to small valleys and pass crossings, everything is included. This trekking tour is one of the most demanding and is only recommended for experienced hikers. You will hike between four and a half and seven and a half hours daily, through high alpine terrain in parts. On the sixth day you have the opportunity to take a break – or to climb a summit in the Karwendel Mountains.

Itinerary at a glance

Between deep gorges and high peaks you will hike in the Karwendel in an impressive natural landscape. Remember to take a look inside Schachen Castle and finish with a ride on the Hafelekar cable car to Innsbruck.

The famous olympic town Garmisch-Partenkirchen beckons you to explore: discover the beautiful pedestrian zone, the traditionally painted houses and cozy beergardens.

Walk deep into Höllentalklamm to alpine pasture Höllentalangeralm at the foot of Zugspitze. Take the high altitude path above the gorge to Hupfleitenjoch and cross alpine pastures to Kreuzeck. Overnight in Garmisch, take the cable car down.

In the beginning of the day you once more walk through a gorge on the foot of Wetterstein. A hiking trail leads steeply uphill on Königsweg to castle Schachen, once built by King Louis II. Rather unpresumptuous on the outside the inside is very glamorous. Overnight in comfortable Schachenhaus.

Hotel example: Hütte Schachenhaus

The climb up to the pass and walk to the border cabin has everything that makes mountain hiking so attractive. Afterwards down into Leutasch valley and on to Scharnitz. In the beginning you cross rocky landscape, then through a little valley and in the end of the day another pass waits for you. Possibility to shortcut by coach.

Hotel example: Frankenhof

Transfer deep into Karwendel valley. Comfortable start with walk up to Halleranger alpine pasture which takes about 2 hrs. Take it easy or hike up to Überschalljoch. The next two nights are spent on Halleranger Alm.

Today it is up to you: do you enjoy a relaxing rest day at the alpine cabin or do you undertake a couple of interesting summit tours in beautiful Karwendel massif. According to your level of fitness you can choose between one of our hiking suggestions or relax.

Hotel example: Hütte Halleranger Alm

A marvellous high altitude path crosses several ridges (passes) to well known Northern Chain. A couple of sections require sure footedness and stamina. Afterwards you head on to the summit station of Hafelekar and glide majestically downhill to Innsbruck.
