View of Trier with Moselle and ship in the foreground

An incredible combination of panoramic views, nature and culture are offered on both of these quality footpaths. From the delightful, little wineries in the border triangle, you will discover the charming Moselle and Saar scenery along from the old Roman roads until you get to Trier. This pleasant metropolis by the river Mosel charms its visitors with its lively old town and 9 UNESCO world heritage sites, which you will explore whilst on a circular walk through Trier. A boat ride on the Mosel offering many panoramic views is a must before you continue your week’s walk with a magnificently diverse stage along the Eifel Trail through wild and romantic nature and finally by crossing a suspension bridge into the idyllic Kyll valley.

What you absolutely must have experienced on the Moselsteig and Eifelsteig Trail? The views over the rivers Moselle and Saar, the old Roman roads and the historic city of Trier. Just like the boat tour on the Moselle or a wine tasting at one of the numerous wineries. But basically, with Eurohike, you determine the pace of your hiking holiday. This leaves enough time for breaks and relaxing hours of leisure.

  • Trier, the oldest city in Germany: The Moselle metropolis of Trier has a whopping nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Just immerse yourself in the lively old town and let the street life work its magic on you. A Moselle boat ride is included in the vacation.
  • Countless Views: The daily tours run mostly on panoramic paths high above the river Moselle. Extensive views of the Moselle river valley with its wine terraces are guaranteed.
  • German quality hiking trails: Both the Moselsteig Trail and the Eifelsteig Trail have been awarded German quality hiking trail status, which differ from other paths in terms of the quality of the trails and the sophisticated route system.
  • Exquisite Moselle wine: Germany’s fifth-largest wine-growing region offers the best conditions for juicy grapes and thus for exquisite wine. The Elblingwine from the Moselle region is known and loved all over Europe. Find out more about our hiking holidays for wine lovers.

In the small wine-growing community of Perl in the Saarland, you will get a foretaste of the next few days of hiking, where you will visit one small town after the other. The following days you leisurely hike high above the river – covering about 8 to 20 kilometres a day. The routes are easy to manage, longer stages can be shortened using public transport. Thanks to the extensive route material from Eurohike, you always know about the current stages and can also plan detours off the scheduled route.

Itinerary at a glance

The Moselsteig and Eifelsteig are among Germany's quality hiking trails, and you'll be following in the footsteps of the Romans. At the latest in Trier, Germany's oldest city, you will notice the influences - and the joy of good wine.

You set off on your week’s walking holiday from the small wine growing district, Perl in the Saarland and you then walk along the river Mosel, which is only separated from the Luxemburg’s border town, Schengen, by the river Mosel itself.

The start of your week’s walk gives you a view across the border triangle to Luxembourg and France. Your route takes you from the delightful wine-growing region via quaint forests and extensive fields in the Palatinate wine village, Palzem, which welcomes you with famous wineries and extensive vineyards. There you will meet again the river Moselle and enjoy a glass of the best Elbling wines.

After visiting the double towered Helfant cathedral, you walk along the paths offering great views and short but steep ascents along the flourishing meadows and forests. Enjoy the view of the river Mosel before you reach the next wine district by a crossroads.

With an impressive panorama of the Moselle and the unique limestone cliffs on the Moselle and Saar, you will hike on varied paths through the Nitteler Felsen nature reserve, which is rich in species, to Wasserliesch. From there it goes by train to the Moselle metropolis Trier.

Make sure that you visit the UNESCO-World heritage site Porta Nigra, the amphitheater and the cathedral in Germany’s oldest town. You walk along the Traumsteig up to the Petrisberg where you will get a breathtaking view of Trier and the Mosel valley. In the afternoon, you will go on a panoramic ship ride on the river Mosel.

Today you will switch from the Moselsteig to the Eifelsteig. It is the final stage on this walking holiday and it would be pretty tricky to offer more highlights than on this tour. Impressive natural monuments like the well-known Genoveva and Klausen caves or the view of the Kyll river meanders and the imposing Burg Ramstein are all waiting for you on today’s walk through the romantic Butzerbach valley. Return to Trier by train on your own.
