Hiking break on the Lusen with a view down into the valley

The Goldsteig promises pure hiking pleasure: at 660 kilometers, it is the longest and one of the most diverse quality trails in Germany. This long-distance hiking path takes you through a fascinating low mountain landscape, where small villages, culture, and untouched nature alternate within the Oberpfälzer Wald Nature Park and the Bavarian Forest National Park. During your individual hiking journey along the northern route through the Bavarian-Bohemian border area, you'll discover the "Green Roof of Europe" in all its glory. The largest contiguous forest mountain range in Central Europe will make any hiker's heart soar.

A wonderful getaway awaits you on our tour along the Goldsteig, the longest and most diverse quality hiking trail in Germany. Your eight-day active journey begins in Bodenmais, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the spa town and its many attractions upon the day of arrival. The following day, you'll embark on a loop tour to the Chamer Hütte and the Großer Arber. The next stage takes you along the well-maintained trails to the air spa of Bayerisch Eisenstein and then onward to Zwieslerwaldhaus. The following day offers a stunning hike to the Großer Arber, complete with breathtaking panoramic views. The subsequent day excursions lead you to enchanting spots, including the Großer Rachel, the Rachelsee, the Teufelsloch, Waldhäuser, the Lusen, and finally, your endpoint in Mauth.

  • Take a deep breath and discover Bodenmais: Right at the start of your mountain hiking journey, you have the chance to explore the spa town of Bodenmais. Not only can you enjoy a particularly healthy, forest-rich low mountain climate here, but you’ll also find attractions such as the Silberberg visitor mine, the Joska Crystal glass factory, the Herrgottschnitzer woodcarving shop, the Risslochwasserfälle (Rissloch Waterfalls), and a lovely promenade perfect for strolling and shopping.
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from the "King of the Bavarian Forest," Großer Arber: On the fifth day of your hiking adventure, you'll ascend to the Großer Arber. Standing atop the highest peak in the Bavarian Forest, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views that stretch across the stunning landscape below.
  • Ascend to new heights on the Großer Rachel: The excitement continues on the sixth day of your active journey with a hike to the ‘Great Rachel’ known locally as Großer Rachel, towering at 1,452 meters. After the Großer Arber, this mountain is the second-highest peak in the Bavarian Forest.

Our hiking tour along this German quality trail is categorized as ‘Mountain Hiking.’ Daily stages are planned for five to seven and a half hours, and with a good base fitness level, even the more challenging routes offer a rejuvenating experience in the beautiful Bavarian nature. For the summit stages, we recommend sturdy footwear, stamina, and also surefootedness.

At the summit of the Großer Falkenstein it is recommended to take a break to enjoy the breathtaking view. Below the Scheuereckberg, the enchanting Jährlingsschachten awaits you.

In addition to the original high moor Zwieselter Filz you will experience other high pastures. You follow the Goldsteig trail to the Waldschmidthaus below the summit of the Großer Rachel. By bus to Spiegelau.

Short bus ride to Gfäll and then steadily uphill to the summit of the Great Rachel. A short detour to the picturesque Rachelsee Chapel with a view of the Rachelsee, before the hiking trail leads you further over the Felsenkanzel and through mixed mountain forests to the Teufelsloch.
