Your adventure begins and ends in the enchanting Bavarian town of Oberstdorf. From there, conquer the striking Mädelejoch Pass, journey from Allgäu to Tyrol, and stand atop the Valluga Peak at 2,800 meters, gazing out over Vorarlberg along the exhilarating Arlberg Trail. Traverse scenic valleys like Lech and Stanzer, tackle spectacular trails leading to the Leutkircher Hut, and conclude your tour on the panoramic Krumbacher Trail in the formidable Allgäu Alps. Your hiking vacation begins in Oberstdorf, renowned for its ski jumping ramp but also boasting a charming town center. Your first hike takes you through the stunning Sperrbachtobel to the Kemptner Hut. At Mädelejoch, you'll cross into Austria and traverse the spectacular hanging bridge in the Lech Valley into the Bavarian village of Holzgau. The second stage leads you into the Lechtal Alps, where you'll reach the pass near the Leutkircher Hut before heading toward St. Jakob in the Arlberg region.

On Day 4, you'll begin with a scenic cable car ride to Valluga, then hike along the Arlberg Trail to the Stuttgarter Hut, all while enjoying magnificent views. For a change of pace, the following day takes you along tranquil paths through the Lech Valley. The impressive Lech Gorge and the charming mountain village of Warth are highlights. The final stage brings you back to Oberstdorf. After crossing into Bavaria, you'll stop at the Mindelheimer Hut and hike the Krumbach High Trail to the picturesque Guggersee.

  • Dare to cross the hanging bridge in Holzgau: With stunning views of the Tyrolean Alps, you'll walk 110 meters above the ground on the 200-meter-long hanging bridge. Alongside the breathtaking panoramas, you'll also enjoy unique vistas of the Lech River.
  • The spectacular Lech Gorge, near Füssen in the Allgäu, is an impressive and picturesque canyon that stretches along the Lech River. The scene is defined by steep rock walls, crystal-clear water, and breathtaking landscapes, with wooden bridges and walkways crossing the river.
  • On the Krumbacher Höhenweg to the Guggersee: The Krumbach High Trail offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, appealing to many hikers with its diverse landscape and beautiful nature. At its end, you’ll reach Guggersee, a picturesque mountain lake situated at around 1,100 meters above sea level.

Except for the day spent in the Lech Valley, each stage of the hike immerses you in breathtaking alpine terrain. You'll cover between 11 and 18 kilometers each day, which translates to hiking times of up to seven hours. Unwind in delightful hotels and guesthouses, where you'll be greeted each morning with a sumptuous breakfast. As a memorable keepsake, take home a delicious "Lechweg cheese" to remind you of your alpine adventure.

Itinerary at a glance

Unforgettable experiences await, from the panoramic views atop the Valluga, the "King of the Arlberg," to the majestic mountain scenery along the remote Krumbacher High Trail. The thrill of crossing the suspension bridge at Holzgau adds to the adventure. The idyllic Lech Valley, along with marmots in the alpine meadows and chamois on the rocky cliffs, ensures lasting memories.

Wander through the picturesque town of Oberstdorf or ascend to the Nebelhorn via cable car, the town’s iconic peak. Soak in breathtaking panoramic vistas that set the stage for your upcoming adventure.

After a short bus ride, embark on a stunning trail through the Sperrbachtobel Gorge, ascending to the Kemptner Hut. Cross the Mädelejoch Pass, stepping from Germany into Austria, then descend into the picturesque Lech Valley. Cross the dramatic suspension bridge at Holzgau, renowned for its Bavarian frescoes, before taking the bus to Steeg.

Take the bus to the hiking start point in Kaisers. From there, follow remote alpine paths deep into the Lechtal Alps. The trail leads you to the pass near the Leutkircher Hut, where a cozy rest awaits. Continue your descent towards the Arlberg and then follow the Camino route to St. Jakob. Afterward, a short bus ride will bring you to St. Anton, famously known as the "cradle of alpine skiing."

Ascend to over 2,800 meters via the cable car, and be dazzled by the breathtaking vistas from the Valluga. Embark on the thrilling Arlberg Trail as it guides you through rugged, alpine landscapes. After a challenging climb to the Stuttgarter Hut, savor a mesmerizing high-altitude trail with unparalleled views over the majestic plateau. After soaking in the scenery and enjoying a well-earned break, glide effortlessly down to Lech in the gondola, ending your day in style

After the demanding mountain stages, today’s journey offers a blissful walk along the enchanting Lech Valley. Glide over verdant alpine meadows, where grazing cows add to the pastoral charm, and marvel at the dramatic views into the wild Lech Gorge. Stroll through a scenic forest path, gently ascending into the picturesque Walser village of Warth. Here, you can unwind by a serene natural swimming lake and visit the highest dairy farm in Vorarlberg, where a refreshing break awaits.

From Warth, ascend through diverse terrain to the old customs hut and cross the border into Bavaria. It’s a short distance to the Mindelheimer Hut, where you can enjoy a hearty meal. Refreshed, continue along the Krumbacher Höhenweg, taking in the awe-inspiring views of the Allgäu Alps as you head towards the Guggersee. After descending and a brief bus ride, you’ll return to Oberstdorf, the starting point of your journey. Relax and savor a leisurely evening in the picturesque Allgäu region.

Alpine Hikes with durations ranging from 4 to 7 hours. You'll traverse high alpine terrain, requiring prior hiking experience. Sure-footedness, a head for heights, and excellent physical fitness are essential. Four out of five hiking days involve alpine trails, with easier alternatives available (except on the second day).
