Rural, placid, sincere and hospitable: this is how the Alsace region presents itself during your walking tour between vineyards and along the slopes of the Vosges. Enjoy the ancient townscapes, the romantic wine villages and the impressive castles, and nature enthusiasts will be especially fascinated by the unspoilt and diverse scenery. Last but not least, is the amazing cuisine in this precious region, combining Alsacian heartiness and French sophistication and creating wonderful culinary delights. The route takes you through a marvellous cultural region with vineyards, picturesque country estates and villages with castles, palaces and ruins.

Alsace and its wines are known far beyond the borders of France. In addition to fine wines. Countless peaks, half-timber houses and wine routes await you on this hiking holiday. Halfway through the hiking holiday you will cross the Croix de Wihr-pass and enter Munster. Munster is also the place of origin of the aromatic cheese of the same name, at the foot of the Col de la Schlucht. Along the following stages you will encounter many castles, sparse forests and in the lower parts of the Vosges featuring vineyards in the background.

  • Night watchman tour through Turckheim: You can reach the pretty winegrowing village on day 2 of the hike. Interested in the history and legends of Turckheim? A night watchman will guide you to the scenes in the dark of night!
  • Half-timbered houses and unique silhouettes: The town of Kaysersberg exudes a great deal of charm. In addition to the beautiful half-timbered houses, the castle and castle ruins are also recommended by the Eurohike team.

Well signposted hiking paths make it easy to follow the route through Alsace. You will also hike through hilly terrain with partly unpaved ground. Walking times are between 4.5 and 6.5 hours per day and is therefore not a problem for ambitious hikers. Above all, the diverse landscape makes the hiking tour particularly interesting. Take a stroll through Alsace and experience how two cultures merge!

Itinerary at a glance

In charming Kaysersberg, the castle ruins and half-timbered houses are worth exploring and the night watchman will take you to historical sites in Turckheim. In addition to the Vosges peaks, the vineyards also await your visit!

Eguisheim, situated in the heart of the wine route, is a supreme example of a medieval city with flower decorated house facades. This wine villages invites you to a leisurely stroll and a wine tasting.

Ascend through the vast vineyard scenery to the little wine-growing village of Husseren and continue uphill to the three castles of Eguisheim. From the castle Hohlandsberg you have an unforgettable view onto the surrounding wine villages and the Alsacian plain. Your tour ends in Turckheim, an idyllic wine-growing village. At 10 pm on the dot you will still find the night watchman walking through the little town.

From Turckheim the route takes you through the well-known wine-growing estates of Katzenthal and Käferkopf. After Katzenthal you climb up to the top of the Bornthalkopf mountain and reach the wine-growing area around Kaysersberg. The location, the unique silhouette and the stunning half-timber houses crown Kaysersberg as one of the most beautiful villages along the wine route.

Leave the Alsacian wine-growing region and walk in the Vosges with magnificent views onto the Rhine plain, the Black Forest and the Alps. Continue through forests and in parts rocky regions covered in mountain pines, then up to the Petit Hohnack and and the Grand Hohnack. After the Croix de Wihr pass, the route leads you downhill to Munster, the place of origin of the aromatic Munster-cheese at the foot of the Col de la Gorge pass.

On today’s tour you still remain in the lower parts of the Vosges through soft rolling hills and scenery with vineyards, castles and sparse forests. Via the Wasserberg mountain, the medieval little town of Wasserbourg and the Mühlkopf, you make your way towards Wintzfelden and thus return to the Alsacian wine-growing region.

Once again a walking tour rich in beautiful views awaits you. With the path situated high above the valley, you will enjoy views onto wine-villages nestling amounts vineyards. Continue through the picturesque Alsacian wine-growing region and approach your starting point Eguisheim, where the circle of your walking tour closes.

The terrain is hilly with well-marked walking paths (mainly dirt tracks and meadow trails), in parts also asphalted sections. For walking times between 4.5 and 6.5 hours, a basic fitness level is sufficient. A varied route through the marvellous wine-growing scenery of the Alsace region awaits.
