Accordingly, Burgundy's cuisine is known as one of the best in the world and the deep red Burgundy is synonymous with the finest wine. The best way to explore Burgundy is on foot, discovering small, dreamy villages, medieval castles and old monasteries. A picnic along the way with culinary delights from the region and a sip of the fine wine will leave you feeling inspired and like God in France!

Be active and enjoy, what a glorious combination. This wonderful symphony of exercise, culture and enjoyment awaits you on our seven-day hiking holiday in Burgundy. The leisurely daily stages take you from Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy, to Meursault, Nolay, Rully/Chassey le Camp and the municipality of Mercurey. The route, which always leads you to beautiful wineries along the way, shows that his hiking tour is made for real wine connoisseurs. You will stay in comfortable accommodations as well as charming boutique hotels.

  • Cultural highlights in Burgundy: The picturesque region also has a lot to offer in terms of culture. On this active holiday you have the opportunity to visit Hotel Dieu in Beaune, follow in the footsteps of the Romans in the village of Saint Romain, explore the castle of La Rochepot in the village of the same name, or marvel at Montaigu castle in Mercurey.
  • Long-distance views as far as the Alps: On the stage from Nolay to Rully, particularly fabulous views over the Saône plain await. In good weather conditions you can even see the Alps in the distance.

This hiking holiday is assigned our level of hiking ‘Moderate Walking’. The daily stages are planned to take around three to six hours and can be mastered wonderfully with a basic fitness level. Plenty of time is always planned to explore the historical sights and taste the noble grape varieties.

Itinerary at a glance

In Burgundy, delight in wine and culture, such as visiting the castles of Montaigu and La Rochepot. From Nolay to Rully, you can look forward to fantastic panoramic views – on a clear day, you might even see the Alps..

Beaune is Burgundy’s ‚wine capital’ with a lovely old part of town. You have the opportunity to visit the hotel Dieu.

As soon as you have explored Beaune sufficiently, start your walk towards Meursault. Gently the trail leads into the well-known wine village of Pommard, where you will have the first opportunity to taste some of the delicious Burgundy wine.

Today you come across the picturesque village of Saint Romain. Follow the Roman traces within the ruins of the palace. The church dating back to the 12th century is also worth a visit and the village restaurant offers a first-class lunch.

Leaving the vineyards behind, you walk in the shade of the characteristic oak forest. After that on to La Rochepot village and marvel at La Rochepot palace which is definitely worth a visit. From La Rochepot follow the trail to the ancient market town of Nolay.

This day commences with a gentle ascent across lovely pastures with the well-known Charolais cows grazing. Once at the top you walk downhill to Santenay village accompanied by marvellous views onto the Saône plain and a glance of the Alps in the distance. Onwards past the ‚Canal du Centre’ and through vineyards to Rully/Chassey le Camp.

Today’s first target is Montaigu palace in the South and follow remote trails past vineyards and forests along the ‚Côtes Chalonnaises’. Past the villages Aluze and Nantoux the path leads you into the well-known village of Mercurey.

Itinerary at a glance

Enjoy wine and culture in Burgundy, for example during a visit to the Clos de Vougeot castle. In Beaune, you can explore the heart of the old town and taste delicious wines on a tour of a wine cellar.

Explore the pedestrianized area of the old town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015.

Short bus journey to the outskirts of Dijon. From there, the route immediately leads into a picturesque valley that runs along the foot of the Chenôve plateau. This region is known for its rich Mediterranean flora and the white limestone that was used to build many of Dijon's monuments. Continue southwards to the famous vineyards of the Côte de Nuits. Your arrival in the renowned village of Gevrey-Chambertin marks the beginning of an exciting discovery tour through the region's famous vineyards.

Short stage through the breathtaking landscapes of the Côte de Nuits and Haute-Côte de Nuits, known as the ‘Champs-Élysées of Burgundy’. You will see famous villages that have earned the region its UNESCO status and feel the unique climate that gives the wines from this region their special flavour. The imposing Château de Clos Vougeot offers you an insight into the history of Burgundian wine production. The tour continues through the vineyards of Grands Echezeaux, Vosne-Romanée and Romanée-Conti before reaching Nuits-Saint-Georges.

In the morning, you will walk past the foot of the famous Comblanchien quarries, known for their marble-like, hard limestone, which was used in the construction of the Paris Opera. Your route then takes you to Ladoix-Serrigny, Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses, three wine-growing regions that invite you to savour their wines. The sea of vines leads you to the historic town of Beaune.

Today you have the day at leisure to explore the historic heart of Beaune and in particular the famous hospices with their glazed tiles. You can also visit the Cité des Climats et Vins de Bourgogne, a modern museum dedicated to viticulture and wine production. In the evening, a wine tasting awaits you, during which a winegrower will share his knowledge and introduce you to five wines.

You are now in the heart of the Côte de Beaune. A detour to the 18th century castle of Pommard gives you a view of the 20-hectare walled vineyard of Clos Marey-Monge, the largest private vineyard in Burgundy. Your route continues along the back of Volnay, most of whose vineyards are located on the slopes of the Montagne du Chaignot. Auxey-Duresses marks the transition from red wines to white wines, which can develop perfectly on the soils of Meursault.

Today's hike, initially through wooded terrain, takes you to the village of Gamay, the namesake of the grape variety of the same name. Continue to the famous slopes of Chassagne-Montrachet, where the Chardonnay produces some of Burgundy's most famous white wines. The route then passes through Santenay, a picturesque spa town with a large number of windmills and the River Dheune. Following a former railway track along a canal, you reach your destination of Chagny and the end of this wonderful wine route. From there, take the comfortable train to Dijon.
