The Hohe Tauern National Park is a breathtaking natural wonder, the largest in the Alps and one of Europe's most expansive protected areas. Here, nature unfolds in its most dramatic form, with a sea of snow-capped peaks soaring over 3,000 meters. As you explore, you'll encounter majestic wildlife like marmots, golden eagles, and chamois, while the alpine landscape dazzles with ancient larches, Swiss pines, and radiant alpine roses. In the heart of the park, thunderous waterfalls and rushing mountain streams set a captivating scene. A visit to one of the rustic mountain huts is the perfect way to take in the awe-inspiring surroundings. On the high trails along the northern side of the Saalach Valley, part of the Kitzbühel Alps, jaw-dropping views of the Salzburg and Tyrolean mountain ranges await. Let the sound of cowbells and the lush, vibrant meadows transport you into a world of alpine adventure.

Stunning mountain vistas, roaring waterfalls, lush alpine meadows, and well-maintained trails — hiking tours in Austria combine all these elements with the country’s distinctive culinary delights. In Austria, there’s always time to enjoy a well-deserved break and savor the local flavors.

Your thrilling hiking adventure in the Hohe Tauern kicks off in Krimml. Beyond the charming village, the awe-inspiring Krimml Waterfalls stand as a major highlight. Your journey begins with a loop tour that takes you from these majestic falls through the Krimmler Achental and up to the Krimmler Tauernhaus. From there, you'll tackle the rugged Gerlosplatte, the dramatic Falkenstein, and the captivating Trattenbach Gorge before arriving in Neukirchen. On Day 4, with the Großvenediger towering in the distance, you'll venture into the heart of the National Park. A taxi will whisk you up to higher elevations, and you'll make your exhilarating descent via the glacier trail, passing the stunning Gamseck Waterfall and the enchanting Blausee.

On Day 5, the adventure continues as a cable car carries you up to the Wildkogel. Here, you'll trek along the panoramic trail near the Tiroler border, with breathtaking views of the Wilder Kaiser towering before you. The excitement builds the next day in the Hollersbachtal, where an educational trail reveals the secrets behind the striking yellow rocks and the dazzling blue waters. After an invigorating hike, unwind at the Senninger Alm, and perhaps treat yourself to a rejuvenating visit at the Tauern Spa in Kaprun. Your journey reaches its peak with an exhilarating final hike—a gondola ride will lift you to the heights of the Kitzsteinhorn, where you’ll stand face-to-face with the awe-inspiring glacier, a fitting climax to your unforgettable adventure.

  • The Krimml Waterfalls, Austria's highest, are truly breathtaking, plunging 380 meters in three cascades, making them one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the Hohe Tauern National Park. A well-maintained hiking trail winds along the waterfalls, offering several viewing platforms where you can fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the cascading water and the surrounding nature.
  • Relax with a view of the Alps in the Tauern Spa: Luxurious yet in harmony with nature, the spa world in Kaprun welcomes you. With a diverse array of thermal baths, saunas, and steam rooms, you can relax and rejuvenate in the expansive water and wellness landscape while taking in the breathtaking views of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier.
  • Stunning panoramic views of snow-capped mountain peaks: Whether you're hiking in Wildkogel or near the Wilder Kaiser, it’s clear that you can look forward to some truly spectacular views. But when you pause and fully take in the sweeping panoramas, you’ll experience those unforgettable goosebump moments that make the journey even more special.

The tour in the Hohe Tauern falls under the category of mountain hiking, so be sure to bring a good level of fitness for stages that can be up to 23 kilometers long. A head for heights is also essential, as the route includes alpine paths and trails that add to the adventure. The trails in the National Park are well-maintained, and there are often shorter alternative routes available for those seeking different options.

Itinerary at a glance

Glacier views of snow-covered giants, gurgling waterfalls, high alpine meadows, and thrilling summit hikes… feel the raw power of nature. Gondola rides take you up to rustic mountain huts, where alpine roses bloom and, if you're lucky, you might spot a few marmots or chamois high on the rocky slopes of the Hohe Tauern.

Welcome to Oberpinzgau! The crisp mountain air of Krimml, situated at over 1,000 meters above sea level, sets the perfect tone for your hiking holiday.

The Krimml Waterfalls, one of the most stunning natural spectacles in the Alps, captivates with its three majestic tiers. Listen to the roar of the cascading waters and feel the mist on your face. At the top of the falls, tranquility takes over as you enter the serene Krimmler Achental. Here, you'll find beautiful alpine flora, high mountain meadows, and seemingly endless vistas. Your route leads to the Krimmler Tauernhaus, a historic way station on the alpine path. A national park taxi will then bring you back to the valley.

On this day, follow the Panorama Trail through stunning high alpine meadows, where you'll encounter cows and horses, ascending to the Gerlosplatte. A national park taxi will take you to the end of the valley at nearly 2,000 meters above sea level, where you'll follow the educational trail into the core zone of the park. The glacial striations along the mountain stream are impressive, as are the towering rock faces and gravel-filled steep channels. As you descend on the scenic route, you'll often encounter cows, sheep, and marmots.
