Two hikers at Lake Formarin

The cross-border Lechweg-Path offers a whole 125 kilometres of pure hiking enjoyment. The sparkling Lech has its source at around 1,973 metres near the Formarinsee lake in Lech am Arlberg. On this tour, the route takes you to the Allgäu, specifically to the Lech Falls in Bavaria. Over six days, you will experience an unforgettable active adventure in the wonderful natural landscape between Austria and Germany and dive even further into your well-deserved short hiking holiday with every step. A soothing experience for body and soul.

You travel directly to Steeg/the surrounding area and experience an unforgettable adventure right at the beginning of this hiking holiday: crossing the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Europe. Full of adrenaline, you continue to Elbigenalp and from there to Stanzach, an idyllic village surrounded by the impressive mountain scenery. The next day's stage leads to Höfen/Umgebung and the following day through the Pflacher Au to Pflach. The last day of hiking leads you across the state border into Bavaria, where the castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein can already be seen from a distance. Arriving at the impressive Lech Falls, you conclude your long-distance hiking tour on the Lechweg-Path.

  • Crossing Austria's longest footbridge: 200 metres long and suspended 110 metres above the Höhenbach Gorge – spectacular and definitely not for the faint-hearted. From Holzgau to Elbigenalp, there is no way around the breathtaking suspension rope bridge.
  • Legendary waterfall: Numerous legends and myths surround the Doser waterfall. No wonder, because it is only active from 23 April to 11 November every year. The rest of the time there is no waterfall to be found here.
  • Even more active time: If you still haven't had enough after each day's stage, you can do an "extra lap" on the Lech loops. These hiking routes are designed as half-day or full-day tours and serve as a supplement to the Lechweg-Path.

This long-distance hiking holiday on the Lechweg-Path always leads along well-maintained hiking paths, in sections also on forest and gravel paths. With a good basic level of fitness and some surefootedness, this active tour will be an enjoyable holiday experience in nature between Austria and Germany. If you want to shorten a longer stage, this is possible at any time by bus with the included guest cards.

Our hiking tip: Enjoy your hiking holiday along the Lechweg-Path together with your four-legged friend, as the routes are wonderfully suitable for hiking with a dog.

Today the river Lech presents itself once more from its wildest side: you hike across a rugged river landscape, past the Lechzopf to Forchach, where another suspension bridge taunts brave hikers to cross over. Across the Johannesbrücke-bridge and through the Moosberg-nature reserve you hike to Weissenbach, cross the river Rotlech and via gentle riverside paths reach the quiet little village of Höfen.

Via the panorama path to a beautiful viewpoint. Past the glistening Lake Frauensee you proceed into the ‚Pflacher Au‘. Here you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view onto the wetlands near the river from the so-called ‚Bird Tower‘, a 20-meter high wooden construction. A little later you leave the river Lech and walk through meadows and forests uphill across the border all the way to Bavaria. Soon you can already make out the palaces Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein in front of you in the distance! The impressive Lechfall-waterfall finally marks the end of the Lechweg-path.
