Forest bathing for body and soul

Breathe deeply and feel good in the green paradise
Hiking trail in the forest

In today’s fast-paced world, where constant busyness and availability often take center stage, the desire for a peaceful oasis grows stronger. Forest bathing, a practice originating from Japan, invites us to find this tranquility in nature. This isn’t merely a stroll through a nearby wooded area; rather, it’s a mindful immersion in the forest that engages all your senses and helps you find inner calm. The deliberate gaze up into the treetops, the gentle rustling of leaves, and the cool, fresh air of the forest create a unique atmosphere that lets you forget the stresses of daily life and provides lasting benefits for both body and mind.

Studies have shown that forest bathing reduces the production of stress hormones, strengthens the immune system, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, also known as “rest-and-digest”. This form of slowing down not only provides a deep sense of well-being but also enhances our resilience to stress. Discover with us the powerful impact of the forest—a mindfulness practice that offers far more than just relaxation. In our next blog post, learn how the forest heals both body and mind.

Positive effects on your health

Science has long confirmed what many people have intuitively felt: nature is a true source of strength & energy. The forest, in particular, offers an environment where both body and mind can thrive. During forest bathing, trees release terpenes—natural compounds that strengthen the immune system and may have anti-inflammatory effects. Studies show that time spent in the forest lowers blood pressure and heart rate, and reduces the release of stress hormones like cortisol. In the forest's quiet, peaceful surroundings, you leave the everyday hustle behind, experiencing a restorative retreat for your body.

Forest bathing is the perfect companion to our hiking vacations. Especially in Central Europe, the forests form a beautiful, interconnected tapestry of deciduous and evergreen trees, with our trails weaving gently through. These lush, green sanctuaries offer everyone a precious opportunity to restore both body and mind.

Mindfulness and sensory perception

In forest bathing, our senses awaken and become consciously heightened. We learn to truly take in the world around us. Instead of rushing through the forest, we slow down to fully savor the moment. Notice the scent of the woods, the rustling of the leaves, the gentle touch of the breeze on your skin. Each of these sensations is part of a mindful practice that enhances well-being. By focusing on these details in forest bathing, we’re also honing our mindfulness—a valuable skill that helps us find calm and build resilience in daily life. Once you take the time to simply be in the forest, rather than just passing through, you’ll quickly realize the preciousness of these peaceful moments.

Much like pilgrimage, where the focus shifts from the destination to each step along the way, forest bathing encourages us to consciously embrace the present moment. Mindfulness is just as intense here—in the forest, though, it’s even more palpable due to the profound silence and the power it holds. Discover the top five reasons to plan a pilgrimage in another of our blog posts.

Shinrin Yoku: The Japanese roots of forest bathing

Over 20 years ago, Japanese scientists began exploring the positive effects of forest bathing in depth. Their research shows that mindfully immersing ourselves in the atmosphere of the forest strengthens both body and mind. Forest bathing, known as "Shinrin Yoku" in Japanese, is far more than just a walk in the woods—it is a healing practice that helps us leave the stress of everyday life behind and promotes our well-being on a deeper level. By consciously staying in the forest, we not only allow our souls to unwind, but we also enhance our resilience and naturally connect with the peace and strength of the forest.

Wie funktioniert Waldbaden?

Unlike a sportive hike, forest bathing is about letting nature impact you without focusing on a specific path or destination. It’s about quietly lingering in the forest, often combined with simple breathing exercises, meditation, or mindfulness practices. The environment plays a vital role in this: the stillness of the forest and the purity of the air invite you to focus on the present moment. It’s best to find a spot in a forest you may already know, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and simply listen to the gentle rustling of the wind. Try to consciously hold your breath as you inhale and exhale slowly through your nose without any pressure. At first, the silence might feel strangely loud, as you become more aware of the sounds while naturally letting go of the thoughts that weigh on your mind. Take 10–15 minutes, or even more, to fully immerse yourself in the present moment. This is forest bathing in its simplest form.

On our individual hiking holidays, you'll have plenty of time during each day’s stages to take a restful break, allowing you to enjoy these special moments and experience nature in a new, mindful way. Forest bathing can be tried at any time and adds an extra, restorative touch to every hiking tour.
