2 hikers on a hiking trail next to an enchanting waterfall in the Black Forest

Schluchtensteig

The Diversity of the Black Forest

8 Days / 7 Nights
Mountain Hiking
2 hikers on a hiking trail next to an enchanting waterfall in the Black Forest

Gnarly trees, gigantic ferns and rugged rocks – you will often see these featured in the landscape of the hiking trip on the Schluchtensteig through the southern Black Forest. In addition, you can expect highs and mysterious depths, close to one another. The southern part of the Black Forest shows of its rough and wild side during this hike.

If you walk through the entire Wutach Gorge you will be rewarded with a view of the nearby Schluchsee. But as soon as the gorge has been crossed, the next one is waiting for you. So it won’t be boring!

The name says it all. There’s a reason why the week of hiking in the Black Forest falls under the category mountain hiking. Over eight days you will explore narrow paths and trails on the Eurofun quality trip, where you will head steeply down left and right and will be right in the middle of the action. On day four you will pass the ruin of the ‘Räberschlössle’ and hike through the Haslachschlucht. From here a steep path snakes through the landscape until you arrive in Lenzkirch.

In the middle of the week you will reach the highest point of the hiking tour as you head towards St. Blasien. From Krummenkreuz you then head downhill to the Bannwaldschlucht, where small bridges and stony paths like the way.

  • Sparkling Schluchsee: The reservoir in the municipality of the same name is an original glacial lake that was around 30 metres below that of today’s lake. The Schluchsee was only formed when the Schwarza was dammed up.
  • Cathedral of St. Blasien: With its 36 metres in diameter and 62 metres in height, the dome is the third largest of its kind in Europe.

The Schluchtensteig takes you over eight days on marked hiking and forest trails through the most beautiful areas. For some descents, such as through the Wutach Gorge, you need sure-footedness and good shoes. If your basic condition is not at your best, we recommend an endurance programme or a few training trips before you start the journey. This is how you can manage every ascent and descent!

Itinerary at a glance

Let the wild and beautiful Black Forest captivate you, especially when hiking through the Haslachschlucht and Wutachschlucht (Haslach Gorge and Wutach Gorge). By the sparkling Schluchsee lake and at the St. Blasien Cathedral, you can reflect on the region's interesting history.

Hohenlupfen palace towers over the little village of Stühlingen, the starting point of your walking holiday in the Black Forest.

You follow the course of the river Wutach and reach a very pristine section. Gnarly trees, gigantic ferns and rugged steep cliffs accompany you through the eastern part of the Wutachschlucht-gorge all the way to Blumberg.

Narrow trails meander through the Wutachschlucht-gorge, which you nearly walk all the way through in its entirety. The water is not always visible, in parts the river Wutach disappears in underground passages,  only to resurface again gurgling in other spots. Nearly at the end of the gorge you reach the little country inn ‚Schattenmühle’, where you will spend the night.

After the gorge you ascend high up today. You pass the ruins of the so-called ‚Räuberschlössle’ (little robber’s palace) and walk into the gorge ‚Haslachschlucht’. From here a steep path leads you in switchbacks out of the gorge and shortly afterwards you reach Lenzkirch. Enjoy the expanse after the long section in the gorge. Soon the little village of Oberfischbach comes into view.

The route leads over small hills and soon you get to marvel at the glistening Lake Schluchsee. From this point you ascend steadily until you pass the highest point of this walking tour. From this point you walk steadily uphill until you pass the highest spot of this walking tour. From the ‚Krummenkreuz’ you then descend into the gorge ‚Bannwaldschlucht’. You continue along rocky trails, via little bridges and then reach St. Blasien

Today you climb up Mount Lehenkopf and marvel one more time at the St. Blasien cathedreal and finally reach Mount Dachsberg. Now you descend into the forest ‚Hotzenwald’. Alpine meadows, heath fields and stunning farm houses accompany you along the route into the gorge ‚Hochwehraschlucht’, which you walk through before you reach Todtmoos.

Walk through the gorge ‚Wehraschlucht’ – a true nature paradise and a wonderful final tour. After a few kilometres you reach the hut ‚Mettlerhütte’ and can enjoy the view from there onto the nearby peaks of the Swiss Alps. Today’s Day Finish are the castle grounds of Wehr, which is also the end of the gorge-trail.
