Beautiful mountain panorama on the “Mont Blanc” mountain

At around 4,807 metres, the famous Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps, and the whole of Europe. Enthusiastic hikers and alpinists from all over the world want to climb the legendary rock massif and explore the multifaceted border triangle of France-Italy-Switzerland. One popular route is the Tour du Mont Blanc, which leads around the gigantic mountain and impresses with a wealth of superlatives. It challenges even experienced hikers and rewards them time and again with fascinating views of the mountainous landscape. The long-distance hiking trail is an international classic that offers outdoor fans a taste of the Himalayas. The Tour du Mont Blanc is a unique experience that you won’t forget.

From Chamonix you go to Les Contamines and follow in the footsteps of the Romans via Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Courmayeur. You then hike along an enchanting high-altitude trail to Val Ferret, before the route takes you to Champex and continues along forest and meadow paths to Trient. The hike concludes with the return to Chamonix. You also have the option of extending the tour.

  • Lake Miage: This idyllic glacial lake with its brilliant turquoise blue colour invites you to daydream and relax. It is located in the Italian Val Vény valley at the foot of Mont Blanc.
  • Courmayeur: Renowned alpinists and mountain guides flock to this world-famous town. This is why it is now known as the "capital of mountain sports", although in the past it was mainly known for its thermal baths and medicinal cures. Courmayeur is located at an altitude of 1,224 metres in a wide basin on Mont Blanc.
  • Chamonix: You should take your time to visit this popular ski and holiday resort. From there, cable cars take you to several peaks. A trip to Pointe Helbronner is particularly recommended, where you can admire incredible glacier fields.

This is a challenging trekking tour where you should allow four to seven hours for each stage. You should have experience in alpine areas and be in a very good physical condition. Surefootedness and a head for heights are also essential to reach your destination safely.

Itinerary at a glance

Meet like-minded people in Courmayeur and Chamonix and chat to them about the glaciers, lakes and valleys around Mont Blanc. Lac Blanc, Val Ferret and the Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme are just a few of the stops.
Day
01
Arrival in Martigny

Early in the morning, travel by bus or transfer to Trento. A first fantastic view of Mont Blanc and the Chamonix valley awaits you at the Col de Balme pass. An impressive ridge path over the summit of the Aiguiellete de Possetes leads you through rocky terrain with a tremendous panorama of the surrounding glaciers. A marvellous day in the midst of the highest mountain giants.

The most spectacular part of the Mont Blanc tour awaits you today: you climb steep rocks on well-secured ladders and ascend to the bright blue mountain lake Lac Blanc. In the afternoon, take a high-altitude trail over the ‘Grand Balcon’ to Plan Praz with its café at 2,000 metres. Take the cable car down to the legendary mountaineering town of Chamonix.

The next stage makes every mountaineer's heart beat faster: following in the footsteps of the Romans over gurgling gorges, encountering different types of rock in different colours and climbing two high pass crossings. Time and again, the views of the massifs of the French Alps are endless. From the Col du Bonhomme on a rocky mountain path to the Col de la Croix du Bonhomme pass. Descend into the glacier valley via alpine meadows lined with mountain streams. Transfer to Bourg-Saint-Maurice.

A short journey takes you back to the Vallée des Glaciers, the valley of the glacier. From there you climb up to the Col de la Seigne pass, where you cross border from France to Italy and enjoy fantastic panoramic views. You then hike through fields studded with flowers to the Rifugio Elisabetta, a traditional Italian mountaneering lodge. A side trip to the turquiose glacier lake Lacs de Miage is enticing, before you take the bus or the transfer from Chalet du Miage (depending on season) to Courmayeur, the home of famous mountain guides and alpine mountaineers.

Passing by Rifugio Bertone, you walk on a very scenic mountain path along the mountain flank. The Rifugio Bonatti mountain lodge receives you to rest on the terrace, directly opposite the massive Mont-Blanc. The path takes you further over bridges and brooks to Arnouva, located at a height of 1800m in the valley head of the idyllic Val Ferrets.

Today, you will hike over the 2500m high Col Ferret pass in Switzerland and reach beautiful Wallis. Rest in one of the mountain lodges and enjoy fresh milk products and the ringing cow bells on your way further towards your destination of La Fouly.
